I took freedom and everyone else is order. SO do I switch?

I am at -20 unhappiness and civil resistance. How deep of trouble am I in? I have just started trying to figure out culture and what it does. I already built statue of liberty though, lol. 5 civs are order. I am freedom and another civ is autocratic. I also bought 4 policies in freedom so far, so wonder if it was all a waste.. :(

Taking an ideology for two free policies is never a bad move, even when you know you're going to be under some ideology pressure.

What you need to do is increase your culture. Your ideology unhappiness comes from not having enough culture to offset the tourism the order civs are throwing at you. Work the guild specialist slots and create great works with your next few great people. Finish culture buildings if you still don't have them all.

IMO switching is not the end of the world, especially if going for a culture victory. I mean you'll be spending at least two or three policies on happiness anyway to try not to be miserable. Plus, much less chance of war ... bite the bullet and switcheroo!

Don't give in! There's a few perks to being different.

- Early adopter tenets (you'll be short 2 tenets if you switch)
- Civilizations of other Ideologies have reduced Tourism over you
- If you have higher tourism than they do, you could be hurting their happiness badly.

On the other hand...

-If their tourism is higher than yours, you could be losing a lot of happiness
-Nice diplomacy boost for same ideology, bad penalty for different one
-Order is borderline OP for most victory conditions (+25% science from Factories, lol)
-If you're after a culture victory, you avoid a tourism penalty if you have the same ideology

Ideological wonders : They keep working
Tenets : You get a refund of cultural points spent, but don't get anything out of the free ones.

At this point you are well past the one that you should switch to Order.

But in your next game build the guilds and run specialists earlier; the main source of culture is the great works; and in addition because each influence level cancels just getting your own influence with them up to 10% helps a lot.

You can switch and join order..yeah... if you have enough culture, you don't have to worry about not having a lot of social policies.

One time long ago (when BNW was fairly new) I lost a game by 3 turns because cultural pressure had me forced to switch ideology from freedom to order some 30 turns earlier - I never underestimated the power of culture from then on. My advice for your situation - if you already have picked one or two of freedoms happiness traits and yet have -20 happiness, switch now and dont waste your time on being unhappy. Else, you can try a turnaround with massive happiness that comes from some picks you can select.
