JAR02, Always War Emperor

:)

Pre-turn:

We have LOTS of territory and a HUGE number of cities. Our military is quite a bit smaller than I would have expected. Battle losses must have been brutal :wallbash:

Why did we ever settle new Teo?!? It's a completely pointless city.

IBT: Units whip by faster than I can see. WTF is Animate Battles turned off? I don't have a clue what just happened.

Cattletown deposes us, taking 2 units with it

T1:

Looks like we lost some units near Delhi.

Retake Cattletown with 2 Cannon and a Cav.
Ping a Byz ship W of the capital
A bunch of ships are on automove! Please don't do this in a succession game. It makes it really hard to pick up on the next turn.

Lose a Privateer sinking an Indian ship near Cattletown

And...end of turn? No, I don't believe it. I go looking for units to wake up.

Army lands at Arnhem and captures a stack of cannons. The ones that we lost in an earlier turnset, I take it?

IBT:

Byz suicides a Cav on the army at Delhi.
They also land a Crusader on the little island. Wowza.

T2:

Cannons redline, and eMDI kills the Crusader. Leader time!
Ship and cannons bombard, then Sword army drops to 9/14 killing the top defender in Arnhem

IBT:
Byz lands another Cav on small island.
Delhi riots  Sloppy of me.

T3:
Cannons ping and cav kills the invader cav.
At Arnhem, cannons and ship redline the musket...
Cav army rides down the musket and kills the LB there for good measure. The city is now in our hands.

IBT:

Dutch want to talk. We ignore them.
Byz cav retreats from one of our Muskets
A second one kills it.
Arnhem riots (resistance ends)

T4:

Privateer attacks on enemy Galleons go 1/1
Cav kills enemy stray Cav (and then gets covered by an Army)

IBT:
Dutch move a HUGE stack into The Hague, where we just landed.
Someone (Byz?) loses a Frigate to one of our patrolling Privateers
Byz loses a Cav at Delhi. I was nervous there for a second...
Byz also lands a Cav next to Lahore.

Arnhem deposes us

T5:

We retake Arnhem with 1 Cannon, 1 Frigate, and 1 Swordsman. 7 resisters :(

I see the first Byz Rifleman!

Kill a redlined Byz cav near Delhi
Lose a Cav killing a second one
Kill a third easily
Last stray cav near Lahore falls to a Knight army

IBT:

Lots of movement, no action.

T6:
Lose a Privateer harrying the Byz coast
Army goes down to 14/17 killing that first Rifle.
Sword army kills Dutch Musket.

IBT:
Byz cavs attack Delhi: One kills the Musket, one suicides vs. the top 3/4 Cav.

T7:

Army kills LB near Delhi
Knight/cav army kills 2 Cavs near Delhi
Cav kills stray Cav
eCav kills stray Cav

IBT:

More troop movements. Byz are headed for Delhi, but they can't reach it this turn.

T8:

Kill the Byz cav near Delhi

IBT:

India lands a settler pair on Small Island.

T9:

Move troops into place, but I don't kill the Indian settler pair.
Bombard and kill 1 defender in The Hague.

IBT:

Byz attacks Lahore via a sneaky path! They retreat.
Byz also lands a Cav on Cattletown island.
India builds Kolhapur near the north end of the island.

T10:

eCav rides down redlined Cav from last turn.
We redline a Musket near The Hague and kill it.

Settle the town of Ironhill near the Indian new town.
Bombard...but then narrowly lose a Privateer to a Dutch Galleon.

Near Delhi:
Army kills Rifle
rCav kills LB

Second Privateer sinks vs. a Byz Galleon

Handoff notes:

I didn't make much forward progress, instead preferring to build up forces at our foothold. One Army can cover the advance of a big stack of Cavs and take Calcutta in a couple of turns. More Muskets are in the pipeline to help defend new conquests.

Watch for more landings on Cattletown island -- and take Kolhapur when appropriate. It's probably worth rushing a couple more units on that island.

The Dutch front is kind of rough. We can smack down anything that pops up next to us, but we don't have enough attack units to keep forward momentum. It will take another couple of ships dropping off troops before we can make a serious dent there.

I switched basically ALL of our builds to military. At this stage, more cavs -- even reg. cavs -- will bring us victory more quickly than Privateers. Byz ships haven't been bothering our Galleons.

Ok, the plan is pretty straight forward. I'll try to keep the kill/death ratio high and grab some more territory. I should be able to play over the next few nights.

Good luck. You can use the Armies for cover, but Cavs vs. Rifles will be bloody. More Cannons in Byz-land would help.

Cavs vs. Rifles will be bloody. More Cannons in Byz-land would help.
Do we still have some/all of those 6(?) Cannon on the western Dutch islands (Maastricht/Arnhem), that I shipped over on my set? And the Galleons they arrived in (and the Frigate that escorted the Galleons)?

Because if so, and if we can't make any further headway in Holland without reinforcements anyway, then it seems kind of pointless to leave all the guns (and ships) there, if they're needed more over in Byzantium/ former Ottomania (which is presumably where we're going next?).

So can we safely ship those Cannons over? Galleons would easily be able to keep up with the M=3-4 Army(s)+Cav-stack as it goes overland, and — so long as the stack isn't on an Impassable-to-Wheeled terrain (e.g. Mountains) — drop off the Cannons into the stack once it arrives outside the next (coastal) target-town.

Next turn the Cannons (and any escorting Frigates) can bombard the town, and the Army(s) and Cavs can (try and) capture it (though the healthiest Army should return/ remain outside the town to guard the fired guns). At the beginning of the turn after that, the guns could be moved into the newly captured town, loaded back on board their ship(s), and sailed along to the next target.

Sure, that would mean that our advance would be restricted to coastal towns, and slower than if we were relying solely on Cav-assaults — but it should also save us a few HP on each of those assaults, so we wouldn't need to rush/ship as many reinforcements over from the core...

Yes; they're outside The Hague as of my turnset. We could load them up and ship them north. Maybe to Bursa? And our Cav+Army stack could head south to meet there...and then push back north towards Calcutta.

And capturing the coastal cities might be all that we need for territory, as long as they don't start flipping.

Currently playing turn 5. Nabbed my first Indian city this turn, and also landed the Dutch cannons next to Bursa where our cav stack is stationed, so they'll attack next turn. I have some units fogbusting byz territory too. The stack at Bursa should be big enough to not need to be reinforced, and troops can be funneled north towards the byz core. Landings on the outer islands have been light, generally just a byz cav and a rifle, but almost every turn.

Sounds good!

Also, good job Elephantium! We are getting close to the end.

Turn 10, 1550AD:
defeat the dutch at Bursa with an ecav (no leader) and an army
defeat the byz cavs at Istanbul, losing 1 cav in the process
retake naissus with a nearby army

Notes:
I left some units with movement: two stacks of workers on our home island, a stack of cavs at Sardica (Byzantine), a musket/settler pair north of Delhi, a small musket/cav stack in Lahore, units to be shipped at Teo, loaded galleons at Istanbul (7 cannon/3 cav).
I shipped two loads of units last turn, and another load this turn, so the ship chain is out-of-phase. With the galleons we have there it could handle one lead per turn.

Once we started taking Byzantine cities, their landings on our outer islands stopped. They have a huge navy however, and have still been landing cavs near captured cities.

I swapped some builds to cannons, and we have some cannons that can be shipped (from, say, Ica island). Our cavs are experiencing losses vs rifles fortified in cities, and our only cannon stack is with the units at Istanbul.

We have a settler north of Delhi (mentioned earlier), and I haven't known where to place the town. Building (approx.) where they are now would give us access to furs. I'm not sure if we want to go for cultural expansions in new territory or focus on building more towns (ie do new captures build temples or settlers)?

GLHF! The question is not if, but how fast!

Great job.
I'll try to grab tiles and take a few more towns to win this thing - we're down to 108 tiles needed.

Well, it was a fun game. Thanks, everyone.

Turn 0: rush temples and settlers where they're needed on our lands. Build town north of Delhi. Move units toward front. Pillage by Sardica. 100 tiles to go.
IBT:
Dutch lose a frigate attacking our privateer. Byzantines lose a cavalry attacking ours, lots of Byzantine boat movement. Our cav retreats from an Indian longbow.

Turn 1, 1555:
Move settlers to their spots. Bomb and take Edrine, losing 3 cavs. Move on Uskudar. 77 tiles to go.
IBT:
Dutch land on mainland and by Bursa. Two Byz longbows die attacking a cav and a MDI. Byz cav takes Naissus, which we had moved our cav army out of because of the flip risk. Byz land by Bursa.

Turn 2, 1560:
Take out Dutch landing on mainland – 2 muskets, 2 longbows. No losses, both regular cavs promote.
Take out Byz. Landing and Dutch landing by Bursa – 4 cav, 2 muskets, 2 longbows. Lose 2 cavalry.
Bomb Uskudar, take it with no losses, collect 2 cannons and a worker.
Retake Naissus, killing 2 cavs with no losses.
Armies kill rifle at Sardica, musket at Calcutta.
45 tiles to go.
IBT:
Boats move. Indian longbow dies to cav.

Turn 3, 1565:
Take Sardica, losing knight army. Take Calcutta with no losses.
23 tiles to go.
IBT:
Boat movement. Byz longbow dies, cav retreats from cannon stack.

Turn 4, 1570:
Move + settle, 5 tiles to go, we may get them from cultural expansion. If not, I've disbanded some boats and cavalry to rush settlers in resisting towns.
IBT: 2 cavs land, we win.

1570 is the save right before winning.

What did you have in mind?
We've played a cultural game, a military game, maybe a science game next?
Small, pangaea... We play as a non-scientific civ vs non-scientific AI?
