When you roll over there team name in the game screen in the score section it gives you the exact amount of EP spent for and against

Okay I see (99% actually). Probably we are not first contact but they already spent enough to see demographics on the other guys and now they want to have a look at ours.
The 99% doesn't have anything to do with how much we've spent towards them versus how much they've spent towards us. It is based on the total amount of espionage points ever generated by the two teams against anyone (or noone, which is the case before first contact). So all it tells us is that they are running 0% on the espionage slider.
Coincidentally, the ratio between two teams' total spending and their spending towards each other is obviously the same if no other contact has been made, which might have caused the confusion.:)

When you roll over there team name in the game screen in the score section it gives you the exact amount of EP spent for and against

I found the foreign relation screen even more helpful in that respect (hover the mouse over the leader heads), especially later in the game, as you can see what opponents spend at other teams, not just your team. From that you could even workout, number of courthouses, spy specialist, slider settings, etc. opponents having contact to teams you have not met yet, etc.

New letter from the Kazakhs...
Greetings friendly Ninjas from people of Kazakhstan,

We like multiple choice, very niice. But it give us tricky decision to make. In meantime our boat go in little circles looking for clams.

In times of important decision as a nation we turn to our elders. Like great Kazakh wise man Yodah, he say:

"If nice juicy apples you have and you meet two men who wish to have some of your apples, which will you trade with?

One man, pears and oranges has, the other just pears.

If you take pears from the first man what does the 2nd man offer that you don't already have?

Not good for balanced diet. Much pears you have. Soon you become sick of apples and pears, much better to have oranges as well, no?"

Wise man Yodah, bad grammer he has and always talking about using "The Fork", but he speaks truth. So we thank you for your kind offer, but we no needing your pears right now. Although we are interested in some oranges.

In my country, we very proud of our great leader. We want to make great, beautiful statue to honour her. But we don't know how to make things from metal.

Clever Ninja wise men know this secret. You tell it us and we tell you secret of word symbols?

Right now, we don't have knowledge of this Alphabet way of which you speak, but maybe soon. When do your wise men want do such a trade anyway?

We have knowledge of writing, but you need to have also if we give you alphabet, no? You clever and know how to write already?

Our ship sail far to reach you, maybe knowledge of proper ships can make benefit our two glorious nations. Trade good. Bring people close together and make good money for both.

In meantime, if we go way of twilight, will it be long before we can make peace and continue our friendly discussions about sharing knowledge?

Hmmm... so that sounds ok, actually.
They want a trade for Metal Casting - rather than a hodge-podge + Iron Working.

Still - they seem willing to trade!

Are we willing to let Metal Casting go? Can we get enough of a head-start on the Colossus?

I think we should try to trade with them if at all possible.
Jump in with your opinion, and I'll start drafting a reply.

If they send us Alpha, Writing and Sailing, i can see us letting MC go. thier satute reference means they may want to take a crack at the collosus.

That said here is where timing comes in. We want THEM to offer the trade.
And they don't get MC until after we have writing. They also need to get us writing before we woudl reasearch it ourselves.

so we need to know:

1. when do they get alpha.
2. will they let go of 3 techs for MC?
3. will they agree to not share MC (which we may have to agree to not sharing alpha, which is fine)

also in reading through the lines, they have told us they met someone else who is giving them IW.

We would need writing before we could get Alphabet anyway, so the tech deal will be spread over at least 2 turns, giving us more time on the Colossus.

What can I say other than I am dead set against giving them MC before t95. We do not want to risk the Collosus, it is worth alot more than alphabet. Unless we build the Collosus in IS, we aren't going to have enough of a head start to get it, and then getting it there pollutes the GP pool so we may not get the GE for Pyramids. The Collosus will not be finished until t102.

My understanding of the apples and pears is that they got offered pears from another team that has just pears, aka cavs, who researched the religious line, and we have oranges in MC, possibly IW.

Also, writing is incredably cheap to us, it's close to 110 beakers worth, not 180. Sailing...we want it. Alphabet...nah, trade for it later, IMO, it is not even a factor in our plans.

Yes I'm opposed to giving them MC any time soon. Forge and colossus in their capital is probably 20 turns? Assuming they have copper which they probably do. Also giving them early MC gives them the ability to get early forges which means a) potential other early engineers and b) ability to raise happy caps with metals.

I'm also against trading for Writing since it's so cheap since we know a civ with it and have all 3 pre-reqs.

Did they say whether or not they were going to declare war and go through at all?

I also agree that it sounds like they're already going to trade Alpha for IW with another team, which is why they don't want IW from us

That said, I'm not really against stringing them along and later on saying no to the MC trade. They have admitted that they want to be tech brokers though...how should we handle that? And would admitting we don;t care for alpha that much indicate we have not meet any otehr teams?

Or it could mean that they haven't met anyone, but figure that many teams that they meet will have IW but they know that nobody else is going to have MC

Going by that logic we could assume that many teams will have alpha...that possible scare tactic?

I am also against giving up MC early....

I agree completely that Alpha is NOT useful to us until we have at LEAST 2 trading partners available (the more the merrier!!!!).

We should NOT give away our knowledge (or lack there of) of other civs, although they will probably figure that out if they go past us and find nothing. We probably need to get more exploring in ASAP to mitigate that aspect by actually meeting another civ.

so in the short term let's:

1. take 3 days (minimum) to respond.
2. make it witty like they did.
3. string them along but not agree to anything (i.e. stall)
4. play our cards once we know who else we have sitting at the table.

Yeah, we do have a pretty good concensus on not trading, although I'd always appreciate it if someone could argue the case for going with a trade...

Well, yeah, that is one argument, I was more talking about arguments for this particular deal, under these circumstances, at this time.

well then it would be to let Kaz win round 1. Have them not see us as as much of a threat. Once we give up MC we are not the #1 team to take down anymore.

That said pyramids and collosus put us back there...so why give them an inch.
