Leaders: How to play them and how to play against them!

Any chance for more of these? They've been incredibly helpful thus far. I -finally- won my first game as Saladin.

I will eventually get to them again but right now I am pretty busy with the RPC games.

There's one word you might want to add to the Saldin write up:

Stone.

Pyramids, Angkor Wat, University of Sankore, Spiral Minaret all use stone. A few non-essential wonders that are on the Arabian tech path use stone as well (Hanging Gardens, Notre Dame). Castles and Walls become even cheaper, so building them just for the extra trade route and a few extra EP becomes really worth it. So cheap even, that you can get a Castle in a newly founded border city by chopping just 2 forests. And, considering you start with the Wheel and are only one tech away from Masonry, Stone nearby gives you a very good shot at both Stonehenge and the Great Wall.

Granary/courthouse takes precedent over walls/castles in border cities IMO (unless at war with civ on new border of course). I'd rather whip walls/castles with Saladin (since he gets the production bonus to those buildings) in a new city after chopping granary/courthouse considering forests are less abundant than population and courthouse is going to need some chop b4 whippping.

A Castle gives an extra trade route, so that partially offsets the benefits of a Courthouse at significantly lower cost. But the main thing is that you can get up a good defense in three turns if your neighbor is Monty or Shaka.

Definitely true if Monty or Shaka, but I can't say that a border city (decent distance from Palace costs and by that time # of city as well) with 1 more trade route will make up the same difference as cutting maintenance in half. As you say, though, with neighbors like that, priorities are definitely defense and THEN infrastructure.

Can You please post some things about Sitting Bull the Quechua Bane, and Justinian? :)
NA with Sitting Bull : Powerfull SE civ with very strong military early (only Cyrus is one who he should fear and look for copper fast fast fast) , decent defence, CROSSBOWMANS, good gunpowder upgrades, ad Phi leader.
Justy: each 5 turn civic changing , zealot civ, alot of happiness (UB) (and preverence over SE due Cultural slider awesomness) and Powerfull UU at Guilds, REX, hi promoted units, very hight demand on resources (optimal to have Stone (Pyro/Walls), Iron and Horse (UU), Gold is also usefull (Paya))

SE is a non-issue. Most games you will want a GPFarm. PHI gets the GP out faster in your farm (whether or not you are running a specialist heavy economy). Both leaders are good in cottage/commerce heavy economy too. ;) It is all map dependent. Even a FIN leader is better off running a Specialist heavy / hammer hybrid economy if the land is mostly food resources and then brown tiles (IE very poor cottaging land and very good production)

FIN and windmills <3
By the way: lately I found myself playing most of leaders like Sid :D.

Sorry I have dropped the ball on this thread. The new RPCs are taking mos tof my civing time. Be patient I will eventually get back to this, hopefully sometime before CUV 5 emerges!

Wang Kong (Financial, Protective), starts with mysticism and Mining
Unique Unit : Hwachi (A catapult with +50% versus melee), A decent city protection unit against melee units
Seowan (University with an extra 10% beakers), A powerful UB that feeds into Wang's technology based game
Mad's Successful The non-isolated Isolationist http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=281853

How to play with: (Turtle and tech). Wang is one of the best leaders if you prefer to stay out of world affairs and peace along peacefully. His protective trait and powerful UU against Melee make him ideal to strategically settle land to cut off the AI and peacefully fill in while using defensive units at the borders to defend against attacks. His opening traits are well suited to get masonry early and an early Great Wall for better defenses. Financial should be exploited with cottages as the later UB will take further advantage of this. When starting look for those occasion times where you get 3 commerce from a tile (riverside dye/gems or an oasis) which gives you an excellent chance to nab an early religion. Wang starts with no food techs so that is how I usually start although an early attempt at Bronze working leaves open the chance of an early axe rush and the financial trait can help you absorb it easier. Wang's most powerful edge though is a beeline towards education for the UB and liberalism. AT that point you can tech towards rifiling to draft protective riflemen or simply cruise towards a space race win.

What to expect from AI Wang Kong (favorite civic is Caste): Not much different from how we should play him. Wang the AI tends to have small empires which are very efficently built up. He does not make many friends yet is not agressive himself, thus it's easy to isolate him. He is also a rather poor fighter and almost always falls to a more agressive leader, so it is opportune to absorb Korea fairly early to take advantage for his well established cities. Wang is considered one of teh weakest leaders in the game as played by the AI.

I'd really like it if you'd be willing to write about one of the Persian leaders, either one would be fine.

Interesting article so far, It's always great to read someone elses views on how to play the various leaders/civs.

Looking forward to further updates to this... Don't keep us waiting too long tho! :)

Please! make one with Kublai Khan... i meet him TO often....

Could you update Brennus and Mao?

It took me 4 times to win with Brennus. I think the average player would probably have a hard time with him.

I am going to try Mao later on. I read in the manual that he favors growth and production. So, I will probably try to warmonger with him or go for a peaceful space victory.

Thanks!

Yea, Mao and Brennus are... awkward. Especially compared to their more simplistic neighbors.
Boudica? War. WAR. WAAAAAR.
Qin Shi Huang? Build an assload of wonders, obtain a religion, and strive for cultural victory.
