Mars Attacks!! The Mafia Game

Good game everyone. I read through parts of the other quicktopics and Takhisis nice job on everything, good to see that final victory writeup.

My take on some things:
Spoiler :

Victory: I really wish people would credit "all of the Innocents" and such like that, when it makes sense, though it's Takhisis' call and I can also see where's he coming from on frustration/after reading the QTs. I agree in this case it'd be fair to some and also on general principle, if it's a clear Mafia vs. Innocents like this. Some folks (like sprig in this game) either had important good play that led to the Innocent victory, or for random lurkers/inactive Innocents, those who "lived to the end" are often just lucky.

I wish I'd been around at the end of the last day when Takhisis was "voting" for people though because I was going to jokingly suggest he kill off my character for no reason, so my character wouldn't be "alive to win with the Innocents" like a previous GM. But anyway, I would say well done to everyone. (cept not the Martians :p)

About inactivity etc...I joined late anyway, and sorry things were disappointing to Takhisis/others. It worked well for me, the player I replaced hadn't even used up his ability (3x scan, turned out to be a bad scan but by the point I joined wasn't a big deal). Two things I would say:

-All Innocents who failed a Personal Goal -argh! I mean, for one there's inactivity, there's also the fact that I *asked* all those people who had "I Hav to find MAH FAMILY" to talk to me or someone in the know since sprig had basically left behind a list of almost every player. I know I said this on our quicktopic too. If I'd been around the whole game or it wouldn't have seemed bossy I would have simply gone ahead and told people each other's identities and who to contact, but I didn't do that and nobody apparently wanted to actually get that done, so no, in the end I didn't reveal anybody else's identities to each other.

-On the Martians killing decisions - early game I would say they missed out on some chances, and then I don't know it takes to get myself killed I guess, I really thought I was going down one of those last couple of nights - I knew the Innocents/we collectively were all good to go on suspects/lynches, but still. I'm amazed I was hardly even considered as a target, especially as I was trying to be a "public face" for the Innocents and most everyone seemed to know I was sprig's family member, maybe the Martians somehow didn't. Again, this was because especially with sprig dead my character wasn't important and didn't want the Martians targeting people with useful abilities. And they did (fail to) attack Arakhor anyway. But still I've gotten nightkilled more as a Mafia than I ever have as an Innocent - sometimes the Mafia could do well to attack the vanilla Innocent who'll actually die than keep attacking the bulletproof ones ;)

On game balance - I think it helped to know the movie, I'll say that. I could have played better, and clued onto some things faster, the nuke disappointed us all I guess but no reason we couldn't have figured that out. The characters and roles matched the story and background excellently though so well-done Takhisis - maybe the Martians were a little right they could have used better cover though, in exchange for raw numbers or "unlynchable ability" or something. Still I don't think we can say the Martians didn't have their shot...I mean, we could hardly have had like an 8 or 9 Martian team to start and at least they didn't have some crazy recruitment scheme or something. I will say, I think this game kinda "snowballed" - having a good start for either side early on would carry a long way through. (which the Innocents kinda did, early Mafia kills and lynches didn't take out any major Innocents). But 7 players to start is still a huge voting majority and there were enough neutrals and even a jester around to exploit.

So good game all. Too bad there's unlikely to be a sequel on Mars but I know Takhisis'll always be around.

This is my true PM, since Tkh screwed it up the first time around, since I was meant to scan to find out whoo was Tom Jones after he told me who he was, so it became to protect/
Spoiler :
You are BARBARA LAND. Your husband, Art Land (Reiser), is the owner of the casino in Vegas.
Really, it would be better if you and Tom Jones (Imperialism) -Art hired him to perform at the casino- could just go somewhere private, away from Art and all those green people.
Who cares about the rest of the world? After all, those aliens say they come in peace, and you believe them, right?
…right?

Abilities: You can protect Tom ONCE IN THE GAME. This protection works against anything, and can be used in either day or night phase.
PO: Art must die. He's a heartless swine, and his death would enable you to marry your new sweetheart…

The SF thread piqued my interest, had to see what it was about. It's been entertaining to follow along, now I see why these are popular. When is the next one?

BTW, what's a QT? And where are they?

QT is Quicktopic.

It is like a simple forum *thread* that can only be viewed by those that you give the link to.

For example, here is the link to the QT I created.
http://www.quicktopic.com/45/H/MsFcYuy6MLNwq

It is an easy way to share infomation to others rather than using the PM system .

As you probably know, my character (Art Love) personal goal was changed when I taken him...
I had to survive, of course, but also to get rid of Sprig :)

If you have questions, this should help. I hear someone really smart and awesome put it together. :mischief:

AARs by Love and sprig would come in handy. I could use it to better balance my next game.

I suck at AARs. But well.

Spoiler :
I got the team PM as my role PM. Basically, I had no ability at all, except that I had the last word on who should die, and the appointing of killers. In the beginning, we knew nothing. Someone volunteered as a killer martian, so my task was easily solved. Our kills was at first un-coordinated, if we targeted someone, some other random would die instead. We was supposed to find our agent to coordinate our kills. Sadly, when we found Johnnugtom (we had an agent-scanner) the humans had already got a grip on him.

Our team was unfortunatly infected by unactives. I thought we would totally lose when I was about to get lynched. Things got a little better when I escaped and we got a freaking giant death robot. We finally succeeded in killing sprig with it, and we had a good run. But unfortunatly, all the martians were discovered by the humans, and that was what killed us. I think that the humans knew too much from start, since the number of characters are limited, and there seemed to be many masons around. That gathered the humans under one flag fairly quick, under Sprig.

Sprig was a pain in the ass.

Well, you sometimes chose to attack the same person twice in a row when you could have been slaughtering other Innocents.

Here's my AAR:

I am Cindy, and along with my partner.... BAM!!! I am lynched because a paranoid scanner talked with the President. The End.

After Action Replay – President of the United States

First up

Romanichine – Sorry - Easily my dumbest move was getting you lynched. But at the time, better you than Remake.

Landlubber – I don’t mean to single you out but your play was baffling. In fact, almost cost us innocents the win. Things like your day 2 vote just don’t make any sense. If you switched me and remake I got attacked you must have realised that Remake was the actual one targeted by Martian therefore he wasn’t Martian. But you voted for Remake anyway!!! Also I told you who grandma was and you did nothing about it. All you had to do was use your ability on her and she would have gained (I think) a vigilante kill or kills.

Overall I think we (town) were lucky that the Martians made some mistakes and had inactives of their own and didn’t use their voting power to their full advantage.

Day 1

Right ok – I am the president, cool, seems like I might be a power role of sorts and oh look at that I know 3 people but best be cautious and let them contact me. Oh look, I get 3 votes, dear oh dear, nobody should give me that kind of power – I will abuse it :D ( I completely miss the fact that I am difficult to lynch as well, if I had known I would have been a bit more reckless.)

I haven’t watched Mars Attacks so I don’t what’s going on but a quick Google search reveals that my character dies . – hmmm great.

So anyways, I decide to vote for Remake for something that he said in the sign-up thread, I can’t remember what it was but I was going to vote for him first day before I even got my role. So when I voted for him, I didn’t even released that someone had already. Didn’t look to good.

Some more votes and then remake role reveals. I laugh out loud and think what an idiot, oblivious to his tactical genius. I don’t believe him, of course, but imo I don’t have to worry about him as he just signed his own death warrant, he will be killed by Martians or if he doesn’t, at the very least he will be scanned (in hindsight he never did get scanned or attacked but more on this later) I might have sent him a pm or two to try get him to reveal so information but can’t quite remember. Some more votes nothing happened and we move into night. I contacted Choxorn who was the General and asked him what’s up and he had nothing to reveal at this stage. Cull the Press Secretary, contacts me with ‘Hi President’. I am a little suspicious since he is not mentioned in my role pm but I can deal with that a little bit later. I think he reveals that he is a scanner but not sure if this was before or after night 1.

Night 1

I can’t do anything at night but I did learn what happened in a few days. I will put it here for completeness.

Cull (presidential Advisor) and Choxorn (General) scan Remake
Martians Attack Remake
Landlubber (Richie Norris) switches Remake and I :gripe: which affects the above results.

Robbie (Lt General) scans Romanichine.

Day 2

Right, I have been attacked but saved by two people it seems, yay. Surviving an early attack is a good start I think, I can be a rally point for innocents. Civplayah reveals to me that he protected me and Musical Mafia reveals that he protected me as well. Something really strange about both reveals is that they both said they could only protect me. Odd but made me happy as I knew I wasn’t going to die so soon.

I vote for Nictel, a guy you should never let lurk. Winston contacts me to say that I am barking up the wrong tree about Nictel. Winstons reveals that his plan is to lay low and look a little bit scummy. He also weasels out of me pretty much everything I know without even trying and guess that I am the POTUS. I think that both Nictel and Winston would be good allies if I can get them scanned first.

In the thread, pressure started to grow on remake as he isn’t dead like expected. I urge for caution, if its possible he is a scanner then I want him to survive. (it is really quite funny that I act this way with Remake but the complete opposite with Romanichine)

Cull tells me he has scanned remake and found him to be a ‘Patriotic American’ rather odd result I think. (he didn’t scan remake but rather me, not that it mattered anyway because he was a naive cop/scanner anyways)

Choxorn reveals that he scanned Remake and found him ‘Patriotic American’ (ok two results as ‘Patriotic American’ maybe that mean innocent I think?) he also reveals that Robbie is Lt General and can scan people as well.

Robbie tells me to vote for Romanichine as he has been scanned guilty. I react way to quickly, I do this because have I seen that Robbie has led the vote on Romanichine and I was worried that Robbie would be revealed as a scanner/prophet/cop. Luckily, I thought they haven’t given a real reason for the vote and I was in a good position to reveal why we should vote for Romanichine.

Remake, in thread, reveals that he scanned Robbie and found him to be innocent. This annoyed the hell out of me. If he was Martian it would make sense but he had been scanned twice so it didn’t make any sense to me. I reveal to him in private, telling him that it is quite clear from evidence in thread that he can trust me. I also ask him to reveal what was the real result of his scan was (since no one else has had the result ‘innocent’) I could have been a bit more clever in trying to trap him but I had already revealed in the thread what an innocent result should look like. I wish I had kept the pm I sent - it would have been a laugh.

It said something like “please tell me what was the actual result of your scan was? Was it Dirty Mexican? Or Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey?” Needless to say he proclaims in thread that Robbie was a ‘Patriotic American’ At this point I begin to doubt that Remake has the metal capacity to play this game properly (sorry remake for doubting you :p It was quite funny that you did though because if you outright refused or said the wrong result I would have got you lynched regardless of the scan on Romanichine.)

So after my accusation against Roman everyone jumps on board, Roman has no defence because there simple isn’t any for a false scan. He does all he can do and protests his innocence.

Meanwhile Arakhor decides to look very scummy and proclaim that if Romanichine is innocent then someone must pay the price and he declared that that person should be me. When you have survived an attack and someone wants to lynch you the next day alarm bells go off! And Worse he spells my name wrong … :gripe: The boy is on thin ice.

Everything else plays out in thread with some nice text walls. I begin to believe that Romanichine is actually innocent (about 99% sure) but I have no other viable targets.

Sure enough he is lynched out found innocent. Problems: there now will be blood. Remake is still not off the lynch list and I am about to join that list I feel.

I will do the next few days later in my afternoon.

I like to keep you guys on your toes... :mischief:

Worse of all, there were a couple of nights at the beginnign when everyone targeted remake and landlubber switched him for sprig. So almost every ability was nullified except one or two mafia kills.

Night 2

I send out a Pm to all the scanners getting them to scan Nictel or Winston.

Ravus_Sol bite the dust (a rather good thing from innocents perspective) turns out to be French…

Day 3

A couple of people get wog’d including a Martian and the lynch mob comes screaming for remake lead by Love followed by Darth Caeser. I note these two names down.

Remake votes for me and I fear he is actually ******ed. I accuse Link for his behaviour and several others follow. And at the end of the day dispite Link having more votes, remake gets lynched. Which well was a good thing for the town.

Night 3

Martians decide to pay me a visit. Good thing I am not home. But classical hero bites it instead.

Choxorn and Robbie Scan Nictel – I think

& Cull scans Winston?

Robbie is pretty much confirmed as a paranoid cop but I am loathe to give him up. I don’t know why it would have made things easier for us and I wouldn’t have become paranoid that he was going to kill me later on.

Day 4

Arahor annoys me but I decided to play it cool and see where the day takes us, game is unstable because of the ciV flood. Civplayah uses the ‘I’m just a poor little puppy that everyone picks on’ card Makes himself look even more scummy. I laugh but then quickly stop when I realise he is the one that is protecting me. I need to get him active and cast a scummy vote at Johnhughthom my 3 votes should ensure he dies.

Arahor comes right out and accuses me. I decide he must be innocent because only a Martian Rookie would make that mistake and he doesn’t seem that type of guy. I am actually very happy about the vote and very interested in seeing who will follow. Landlubber, Flamingzaroc121, dcmort93 do. I note their names down.

Firestorm starts getting pushy about wanting to know who the false prophet is, I still resist. Dcmort93 catches a nice little hook and I reel him in. he quickly back down much to my surprise and makes me much more suspicious of him.

Its not just my suspicious that dcmort as raises Kennigit pulls him over the coals and raises some good points.

We lynch our first Martian yay! I take note of those voting for him. Kennigit; taillesskangaru; Nictel; Darth Caesar;

This leaves me with Love, landlubber and dcmort as my prime suspects.

Night 5

I get targeted twice in one night (I believe) though my perceived innocents Kennigit and Tailess both die

I decide to put more of an effort into this game and decide that if I die I need to pass on my knowledge. I forward everything I know to nictel but he doesn’t even acknowledge.

I compose a pretty good list of characters and start matching them to names.

Day 6

I feel as I am getting close to finding some more baddies but who to choose. Landlubber wins for his bizarre behaviour. Pressure gets to landlubber and he reveals as a key character in the movie.

I get really annoyed with the lack of participation, mainly because it is so dangerous. I post this note which always applies to all mafia Games.

Now a general notice to town.

The towns weapon against the Martian is the lynch. When you fail to cast a vote you are de-powering the lynch and leaving it to be open to manipulation.

This is especially true when you take into account vote abilities. When you guys don’t vote, any player with a vote manipulation ability would have control over the lynch. What happens if they are scum? It would mean that you are handing the town’s only weapon against the Martians to the Martians. How stupid is that!!!

So for the love of good please vote!!!

I am quite happy with Landlubbers response to my accusations and switch to dcmort. There is not a lot I can do about people not voting.

What I really should have done is pushed landlubber privately and got him to reveal all his actions.

Flamingzaroc annoys me by abstaining after my above quote. I look up the Trainspotting quote and find&replace choose with vote:

Vote: Life. Vote: a job. Vote: a career. Vote: a family. Vote: a @%$ing big television, vote: washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Vote: good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Vote: fixed interest mortgage repayments. Vote: a starter home. Vote: your friends. Vote: leisurewear and matching luggage. Vote: a three-piece suit on hire purchase in a range of ^@#%ing fabrics. Vote: DIY and wondering who the ^#$@ you are on Sunday morning. Vote: sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing !^$#ing junk food into your mouth. Vote: rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, *&^*ed up brats you spawned to replace yourselves. Vote: your future. Vote: life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to vote. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you're Mafia.

Flamingzaroc comes back with a good vote and reason behind it.

All my reasons for complaining about non-votes comes true when my solitary vote lynched dcmort93 :lmao: who just happens to beMartian.

For me this was the best write-up of the game. ( I am sure the Martians enjoyed the one where I got stomped more)
