Hi

I saw that we don't have many great works in the game and I thinked that it will be nice if we'll have a new kind of great works - statues. Not big statues like Statue of Liberty. Statues like Statue of David in Florence or the lion monument in Lucerne. The statues will be made by great sculptor. You will earn Great Sculptors' points after you will build "Sculptors Guild". This kind of great work can be placed in museum or other building and in some wonders like Uffizi Museum or the Louvre.
So, what your opinion?

If you have any ideas, I will add them to the list below:
Statue of David by Michaelangelo
Lion Monument by Lukas Ahorn
the Thinker by Auguste Robin
St George by Donatello
Little Mermaid by Edvard Eriksen
Perseus With the Head of Medusa by Benvenuto Cellini
Hercules and the Centaur Nessus by Giambologna
Discobolus by Myron
Venus De milo by Alexandros of Antioch
Athena Parthenos by Phidias
Manneken Pis by Hiëronymus Duquesnoy the Elder

I'd think that sculptures would be included as great works of art, but I suppose they'd either have to acquire rights to use photographs of them or have their artists draw each sculpture, neither of which sounds very easy to do.

Music and writing are also kind of arts

I think they needed to acquire rights for the great works of art, so what's the problem in the sculptures ?

I...honestly don't think ancient sculptures would be copyrighted. At this point most Great Sculptures of any kind would have fallen into the public domain.

That said, it could kinda be a good idea? They'd probably have them as viewable 3D models placed in stuff like Gardens or Museums or something. But eh. Feels a bit like it overlaps with Great Artists since both are primarily visual media, the main difference being the dimension they occupy.

You would need to buy licenses for the photography

What would a sculptor even do, gameplay wise? GArs pop GAgs, GWs pop culture, and GMs pop tourism. What would a GSc pop?

If anything, I'd be content to see certain Great Artists (Rodin, say) pop sculpture great works. I don't think they need to be a separate type of Great Work.

Statues (or sculptures, to use a better term) go together quite naturally in museums, cathedrals, and the like alongside paintings.

Seems like working backwards here. Trying to justify statues as independent great works, and thus having to contrive a new great person to go with them. Should be the other way around.

Right now, you can run out of paintings. Adding sculptures would be a fine solution.

Someone took a picture of the paintings as well. Suffice to say, it's not a big deal. If they needed to, they could use illustrations.

Killmeplease said that they can pop faith and I agree with him.

But would that include buildings and wonders that would generate for great sculptor ?

Yes. Like I said, we will earn great sculptors' point from Sculptors Guild and maybe from big statues (wonders) like Statue of Liberty, Terracotta Army or Statue of Zeus.

Does anyone have ideas for other sculptures ?

Sculptures would be neat. If they were to have "Great Sculptures" then maybe having Marble would provide an increase in great sculpture output.

You would have no shortage of statues to choose from. Literally anywhere on Earth you'll find aesthetically impressive, culturally important statues

I'm not sure ... for me, the main point to this discussion would be: What would be the unique ability of the Great Sculpturer? If there is no suitable "action" for him in the game, I don't see a point in having this as a new "great category". Otherwise, I don't see problems with including sculptures among the works that normal great artists can create.

This is the sensible perspective. Rather than add yet another great person to the game because it sounds "neat", and then contrive some ability to slap on, start instead by figuring out some vacuum in the game that actually needs filling.

Including sculptures is a great idea, but they can simply fall under the great artist's domain.

Agreed wholeheartedly. There should be a natural gameplay reason for adding sculptors, instead of them being added with a poor mechanic "just because".

The game currently has great art (created by a great artist) and great artifacts (dug up at antiquity sites), which can both be used to fill in a great art slot. I have found it odd that you cannot create any great works in the ancient area and must wait until the Classic era. Why not introduce the Great Sculptor as a means of acquiring great artifacts early in the game? It would also be a chance to include more works from all over the world (not just predominantly works from Europe, America, and China). Some ideas:

Building: Sculptors Workshop - Available at Mining. 100 :c5production:. Provides 1 great people Great Person Point (GPP) towards a Great Sculptor. Add up to two specialists to this building to gain culture and increase the rate of Great Sculptor acquisition (1 Culture and 3 great people GPP per specialist) Note: Greatly reduced the culture output compared to other GPP specialists since the building is available so early.

Unit: Great Sculptor - A Great Sculptor can create a Great Artifact (generates both culture and tourism) that is placed in the nearest city that has an appropriate building with an empty slot (like the Palace, a Museum, or a Cathedral). A Great Sculptor can also create a Cult Image, which grants the player a large amount of Faith (based upon your current faith output, much like a great writer...good idea killmeplease :)). Great Sculptors are expended when used either of these ways.

If we were going to include great sculptures and statues, I would like to see great directors and films. Ideas:

Building: Movie Studio - Available at Replaceable Parts. 600 :c5production:. Provides 1 great people Great Person Point (GPP) towards a Great Director. Add up to two specialists to this building to gain culture and increase the rate of Great Director acquisition (3 culture Culture and 3 great people GPP per specialist).

Unit: Great Director - A Great Director can create a Great Film (generates both Culture and Tourism) that is placed in the nearest city that has an appropriate building with an empty slot (Will require new buildings/wonders). A Great Director can also create a Documentary, which grants the player a large amount of Influence with city states (~15-20 influence). Great Directors are expended when used either of these ways.

What do you guys think?

Problem is, there aren't exactly a lot of Museums around in the Ancient era, and Cathedrals will at best be available to one civ who has that religion. So what this basically boils down to is a Faith bomb. That's not necessarily a bad idea, but should it be part of the culture system? Perhaps ... I don't know ... but I think one should be careful with going too far with adding more and more kinds of great "artists".

Yes, the culture design of BNW has some odd components, one of them being that you have to wait until the industrial era to do anything with artifcants or paintings, despite being able to generate the latter in the middle ages, and despite the intuitive notion that civilizations were vaulting artifacts way before then.
