Nuke the spaceport?

There's also MAD... you can nuke someone's spaceport, if you're prepared to be nuked back. If your opponent can build a spaceport, chances are he's got some pretty advanced nuclear weapons.

There must be some way to counter nukes, like some missile shield system. For bombers and nuclear bombers, the answer probably is the classic interceptor/anti-aircraft gun combination.

Agreed, a combination of MAD, diplomatic penalties and ways to counter nukes are to be expected.

I do think there needs some counter to nukes unlike in civ five where there was practically nothing. But at the same time. The SDI initiative was wayyyyy too strong in civ four. It practically made nukes useless.

SDI (Strategy Defence Initiative) intercepted %75 of the ICBM and very few of the tactical nukes. Making the comfortable long range nuclear waring highly costly (but still ocasionally posible), thus turning the odds towards closer tactical nuclear war (tactical nukes are carried by submarines and cruisers), which gives the defender the advantage of actually being able to defend himself via perimeter custody, or any other tactical measure.
SDI just changed the focus of nuclear warfare. It was an excellent implementation actually. Hopes are they build upon this on VI.

It could be a missile shield/SDI national wonder type thing. It could also just be a powerful air defense unit. The missile defenses we have today are more like the latter. The Russian S-400 & S-500, for instance, are supposed to be able to shoot down nuclear missiles/warheads.

It'd be pretty cool if the SDI against nukes was built on an tile. So you could send in paratroopers to take it down. :):nuke::)

That's why I'd like missile defense as an air defense unit protecting neighboring tiles only - so you can destroy the defense and then nuke the target.

Everything needs a counter, even missile defense.

May be nice if the space district in addition to space missions needed for science win will also have a place for a satellite control building which could give you:
bonus to research (scientific equipment) or cultural bonus (communication equipment) or help in espionage or missile defense etc. but you'll have to choose?

Another possibilty might be multiple Spaceports.

If you are only using 1 city to build, you could do it in parallel with other cities.

Oh boy, that's begging for a Contact reference, or even an achievement.
"First rule in government spending: why build one when you can have two at twice the price?"

Well building a Spaceport District should be a requirement for any city that wants to contribute. So if the project is sufficiently expensive, then the more spaceports you have, the better.
