I haven't played Civ for a while now, and what little skill I have has atrophied into nothing. Can someone help me get back into the swing of things and improve beyond that? I have decided to start this game in Pangaea, Normal speed, no huts or random events, with the Ottomans under Mehmed II. I'll take it slow, and give an update every ten turns.

So here's the start

I moved my warrior SE to see if I had anything worthwhile there- I don't:(
That's one move wasted.

As far as my city goes I'll probably SIP, though a case could be made for settling on the plains hill 1 S.

Any thoughts?

What difficulty is it on? I would have moved the warrior 1SW because hills reveal more land and you want to see if that's actually a good settling spot as well. it doesn't immediately look like an amazing start but definitely workable with multiple flood plains, grass cow and lots of forests. You better hope there's lots of other food resources around closeby.

Settle 1S on the plains hill. Mehmed is expansive so you can get a 10T worker doing that. Tech AH first.

The situation in 3960 BC. Not much to report. So far it seems I am close to the tundra. I plan to send my warrior exploring.

Right now I am teching AH, I wonder if my next techs should be mining and then BW?

A worker is my first build, after that, I plan to build more warriors for defense and exploration.

The situation so far...
I've found Julius Caesar pretty close to me, makes BW seem like even more of a good idea. I see a potential 2nd city spot.

And my first worker ready to improve my cow. Now time to build warriors to explore and escort my potential second settler. When should I build the settler though? When my city hits size 2? Or size 3?

And when should I get pottery for the granary? Should I get it before BW or after it?

Here's the save

Its too early to consider city placement, wait until your explorer has finished the initial circuit. If you have horses nearby then a chariot rush v Jules is an option. If you have horses inside current city area/bfc then maybe forget settler and make Rome your second city.

btw It will be easier for people to comment/advise if you have resources visible in your screenshots.

edit. Maybe play a turn to finish AH then don't play further for a day or so to give people a chance to comment.

Settler at size 3 is almost always the best choice. If completely boxed in, Settler at size 2 can also be a good choice.

Regarding research: On high levels, it's best to skip as many techs as possible. You got AH and your city will stay at size 3 anyhow, because you want to get out some Settlers, so no need for Pottery. I also don't see any need for early BW, because for Mining, BW and Pottery, you could also get Alpha and trade for everything, leaving you with the advantage that you got Alpha now. This also means, that I'd skip Mining for the moment, your city got the Cows + 2 Floodplains, that's good enough.

Ofc, the last differs greatly on lower levels, as you could Axe-rush the Romans. Axe rush on Deity is no good idea, but on Noble, you could even succeed with a Warrior rush, so it depends on how you want to learn the game.

If you find Horses, I'dd go for a HA-rush, though on Noble, a Chariot-rush would be even stronger, so again your choice, if you directly want to learn for the higher levels, or if you want to play your best Noble game.

worker should of built a road for 1 turn on his way to improve the cow.Obviouly cancel the action after youve ordered it ,otherwise he would complete the road.

Turn on resource bubbles!

I'm confused about your advice- are you telling me to turn my research off, or skip early techs in favor of more expensive ones?

He's suggesting that you tech Writing and Alpha and then trade for all of those other techs rather than tech them yourself. It's good if the techs that you are delaying are not crucial to your starting position. You will get them later vs teching them yourself, but you will gain Alpha in the process so you gain a lot of beakers and the ability to trade for more stuff later.

I have met Shaka, and I'm starting on my first settler. I found a horse resource pretty close by, but it's in a pretty awkward spot. I have tried to find the best way to secure it,but I'm not sure if this is the best city placement. As for tech path, I'm doing as Seraiel suggested, and gunning straight for alpha, I know for a fact Julius has BW, as he's already switched to slavery. Does my city placement look alright? And I've opened borders with Julius. I'm planning on scouting him. If he doesn't have copper I'll definitely chariot rush him. If he does, I'll see if I can't disable it early.

City 2 looks good. Don't say, it's a weak city though, it's the oppositve. Double Food + Horses for :hammers: and Spices for later, I believe the city also has 1-2 FPs.

You need ot disregard all the desert, your city will probably never grow past size 8 anyhow, so it only needs a very few good tiles to be good.

Alright then the next update-

The advice to go to alpha turned out to be pretty good, after I did so, I found that I could trade writing around to get mining, fishing, pottery and hunting. I scouted out Rome and my eyes nearly popped out of my sockets. His land is so much better than mine. So I had a worker road to the capital so I could rush Caesar as soon as possible. The warrior hanging out near Rome's border was a warrior I was going to use to rush Rome, as Caesar only had one warrior in the city, but then he gained an archer and no longer became worth it. Now I'm heading to horse back riding for horse archers to rush Rome. I also have plans for a third city, near another set of horses I found. Not as good as my second city, but it has a food resource and a horse so it will do.

Second city will have just one :hammers: for a long time which is no good. I would settle 1E so not to waste green hill. Also settling next to river provides fresh water +2:health:. Perhaps you don't need it since its noble game but on higher difficulty levels it is important.
