What are the requirements to upgrade units? For example: I am able to create axemen but it will not let me upgrade my warriors to axemen. The icon is available under the warrior menu but it is recessed or greyed out. Is there something else I need to build in order to upgrade units? Thanks.

It's gold, and (I think) the unit also has to be within your borders. Can anyone confirm the second part?

I have not confirmed this...but i think it also has to be in range of a city that has the resource needed for the unit. Knights require horses. If the unit you are upgrading is in range of city that is not connected to your trade network which connects it to horses then you cannot upgrade it.
Can anyone confirm this? If, that is quite a good feature.
BTW, it is great that you do not have to return units to a city to upgrade.
