Scotland as a Nation? - Your Opinion.

Prove Scotland exists. ;)

I see Scotland as an important part of the United Kingdom, with England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Man, etc. making up the rest.

The Isle of Man is not in the United Kingdom... :)

An ancient nation's collapse brought the known world in the Dark Ages. In history, there have only been two Hyperpowers - - the Romans and the Americans. The fall of England and France were only minor interruptions - - they were nothing in the end. I bet if you ask the Chinese and the Russians what I'm talking about they would quickly fudge the truth as you have.

The Romans were never what you call a "hyperpower." Their power was confined to not much beyond the shorelines of the Mediterranean Sea. They didn't know what was happening in Han China nor Gupta India, never mind intervening.

Of course, if you are speaking about Western history, then maybe you're correct!

Thank you and well said Marla,
At last a poster that gets to the heart of the Matter, Scotland and England are VERY different, we're closer to Europe than the English and we as a nation reject their right wing Conservative views.
I certainly think that Scotland is a much more European-orientated country than England. Part of that is that Scots get a very strange feeling when they hear English people saying they don't want to be ruled from a foreign country and given this strange new currency - this is our experience of the last 300 years. Scotland as a part of Europe makes perfect sense. We'd make good Europeans.

I think you might be suprised how many right wingers there are in Scotland. I think the problem that the right wing in Scotland has at the moment is while they may agree generally with Tory policy, the tory party has been clearly infected by a very unpleasant dose of English nationalism. To a scottish right winger a vote for the Tories is a vote for English nationalism not conservatism.
You being a nationalist bholed will have noticed a certain amount of hetero geniety among your fellow nats - some will be ex labour some will be ex tories.
The nats are not exclusively made up of lefties. Just don't be suprised if Scotland doesn't become a pro-european socialist paradise once we get independence.
At the moment the media trys to cast the Scots as bad uns trying to break up the union - in fact the people who will make the decision are the English voters. If the English vote for the Tories it is a vote for English Nationalism, the Tory party has sold the Scottish right wing down the river and likes to paint the SNP as whackos while their own English nationalist rhetoric is much more extreme. The tories just don't have the guts to rebrand themselves as the ENP which they are - they represent no right wing voters outside of the home counties.
