Turn 10 died....

Explored with Settler and rushed into a barb camp. ;( Really bad-luck. Can't be too aggressive.

I was expecting this to be a slog but what a fun GOTM this was. Also you know what you did with that Fountain of Youth :p

- Were you first to found the World Congress?
Yes I was, infact it seems I was the only person even interested in Diplomacy Victory which was fantastic!

- What Policy trees did you focus on?
OCC? Tradition obviously. I picked the usual holy trinity but had so much overflow of culture I also picked up Patronage as well.

- Being OCC, how did you approach your Diplo strategy?
I know OCC very well so I immediately built up food and food accessories (wonders) in order to grow, grow, grow!
I saved a GE for the forbidden palace to make sure I got it and nobody else which turned out to be not needed anyway.

- Discuss your Ideology choices. Did you choose any Ideology policies that specifically focused on City States? If so, which ones and why.
Freedom, because why not? Free influence with city states would only be topped by Autocracy and killing the other players which is also what i predict will be the fast victory times too.

- How many votes were needed before the United Nations was created?
34, the 33 after Japan killed everyone.

- Discuss any thoughts on the settings or map size. Did you enjoy the small archipelago map?
I really enjoyed it, not sharing the land with anyone meant I could grow peacefully. I had to kill 1 barbarian camp the whole game and that was it.

- Other.
I had to reload on turn 295~ due to a bug with EUI, talking to a dead leader will keep you stuck there, forever! With no way to escape! Not a crash, just required quitting the game. Replaying the turn was simple since the game was just about to end anyway.
Japan wanted to kill me ALL GAME, which made him perfect to bribe to kill everyone else. This also meant I didn't have to focus on building any army whatsoever. I had hoped he would implode but that never happened and he killed EVERYONE which worked out rather nicely really as the other civs were started to become 'guarded'.

I really seldom play Immortal outside of GoTM because i find the unit spam to just be boring to deal with but this one wasn't too bad. The fountain of youth is impossible to reach which I found amusing.

Wonder if we will have a Civ5 GoTM next month since Civ6 will be here.

Well I wasn't sure how to win this the fastest so I scienced until it was clear the AI was too dumb to get to atomic era fast enough so then I just started killing them so the world leader vote would trigger faster but then it was so easy and fast to blast through their cities that I just kept going and ended up killing everyone before the vote :p
I think the vote was like 5-6 turns away? WHATEVER haha

Started out really strong but completely messed up my timing in the end. Should have easily been able to end it 100 turns sooner. There are a lot of things to remember when maximizing efficiency, OCC made it really difficult.

First OCC I've played. Not the most efficient game.

- Were you first to found the World Congress? Yes
- What Policy trees did you focus on? Finished Tradition. Thought about going piety and opened it for the wonder, then changed mind and opened patronage. Opened Rationalism when available. Went back and finished Patronage and Rationalism later.
- Being OCC, how did you approach your Diplo strategy? It was nice that both India and Morocco offered friendships so continuously sold off lux to maintain enough money to always buy city states. Otherwise, building the tallest civ as possible with population as an emphases to maintain science. Spammed wonders to get culture policies and religion for great people.
- Discuss your Ideology choices. Did you choose any Ideology policies that specifically focused on City States? If so, which ones and why. Ideology was freedom. Since i was focused on population in the single city to drive science, first 2 was avant garde and civil society. Covert Action as the last tier 1 tenent. Universal Suffrage and arsenal of democracy were the tier 2, the later was good since there were 3 military city states stocked my army pretty well and i was up against the unit cap. Lastly treaty organization was the tier 3 to maintain city states.
- How many votes were needed before the United Nations was created? 35, guess japan did me a favor by taking out 2 other civs.
- Discuss any thoughts on the settings or map size. Did you enjoy the small archipelago map? archipelago is always easier to defend and wonder spam for me. Less aggression from civs.

Wow, I got killed off before the WC was founded! T151
So I reloaded back ten turns to build walls instead of barracks — and that was all I needed to save my game.

I went on to win on the first WL vote. I had all the CS allied, WI and WR. Globalization and Diplomats placed. I missed Forbidden Palace but still I had only the minimum number (33) of votes needed. (There were only 3 AI left (not by my hand, I was just being a turtle).)

But the first WL vote was not until T350! Can someone point me to a guide to Diplo VC?

Yes, I founded the WC. I didn't find all the AI's, they found me, but I was the first to research Printing Press. I have no idea how many WC votes there were before the UN was created, but then it took another 30 turns for the first world leader vote.

Tradition, Patronage, Rationalism. I probably put too much focus on Patronage at the expense of finishing Rationalism sooner. I didn't have enough faith to really make much difference, but I would have gotten more scientists and less merchants, and more beakers for research agreements. At the very end, I opened up Commerce because I had a leftover policy and I built Big Ben.

My diplo strategy was to stay competitive with my military, and try to be friends with everybody, while buying up all the city states. The friendship with Morocco was a little tense; he kept trying to cut off my access to the sea. I was relieved when he picked my ideology; it made it easier to stay friends. He also kept trying to ban my luxuries.

Definitely Freedom, for Treaty Organization and Arsenal of Democracy. I did enjoy the archipelago map; I figured out from my practice game that my starting warrior should be able to do all the scouting and I could start working immediately on a stele.

Wanted to play out peaceful victory, but then got bored with nothing to manage. And got double DOWed too... So I cleared 3 civs and reached information era just at the same moment. Doh. Would've been much faster if I skipped chemistry/fertilizer and instead spammed some frigates earlier. Tho I'm not sure I'd win the first vote then.

Went for GL, HG and Oracle. Spent maybe a little to much resources on getting influence with city states early, could maybe have focused more on growth and hit that science point earlier, but it got timed pretty good with the world congress. Very peacefull game, kept all the jungle for 2 extra science each and just turtled in without ever going to war. Got Tradition, some of Patronage and Rationalism. Needed 35 votes which I got with schmoozing with my 5 spies.

My first GOTM, first Immortal, and first as Ethiopia!
- Were you first to found the World Congress?
No, but I lead it after the first vote
- What Policy trees did you focus on?
Start off with theocracy to put the Stele to full use. I had first pantheon and first religion founded.
After I finished that I maxed out Patronage
- Being OCC, how did you approach your Diplo strategy?
Focused on making money. City states love boats of of gold after all.
- Discuss your Ideology choices. Did you choose any Ideology policies that specifically focused on City States? If so, which ones and why.
Freedom, keeping city states happy was my primary goal.
- How many votes were needed before the United Nations was created?
I didn't keep track =)
- Discuss any thoughts on the settings or map size. Did you enjoy the small archipelago map?
Was a lot of fun. I've always felt most comfortable playing on archipelago maps, I've always felt the AI gets a bit confused by them.
Being that I've never played on immortal before I was expecting to get spanked. but I worked at keeping all the AI's happy and they pretty much left me alone. I did pick on Japan via spies. I stole 4 techs from him before he noticed me doing it.
Morocco tried to take me out twice, but he waited till after I had my Mehal Sefari units. He could not break my lines and I demolished his army twice :D

- Were you first to found the World Congress?
yes

- What Policy trees did you focus on?
the usual: full Tradition & Rati
slightly adjusted to difficulty and VC: 3 in patronage, 6 in Order (figured the extra science / GS was more important...sadly I had to wait for coal).
during waiting stage 1 each in exploration and commerce

- Being OCC, how did you approach your Diplo strategy?
nothing too special on the Diplo side...bought all CS plus various quests.
Focussed on science and to a minor extent RAs (2-3 always ongoing), not too heavily focussed on befriending like I would have on Deity.
I tried GL but lost ...ah too greedy

- Discuss your Ideology choices. Did you choose any Ideology policies that specifically focused on City States? If so, which ones and why.
Order due to science. CS can be bought easily anyhow.

- How many votes were needed before the United Nations was created?
35 as calculated - it is always a bit tricky to get that number beforehand for the odd number of players/CS.
I realized I'd need all vote boni, FP, World religion/ideology and host to get 36 - without diplomats. Reached Info in t234 with Satellites. I had 6 turns until the next vote and another GS so 10 turn delay due to non optimal timing...but yeah, that's easy afterwards ;)

- Discuss any thoughts on the settings or map size. Did you enjoy the small archipelago map?
OCC and small made me actually join again after a few GotM skips...sounded like a fast game (didn' really work, I somehow take my time, nevertheless I enjoyed it).

Misc:
- Settled on the hill.
- Medicore ruins: spearman, map, sailing, AH
- Build order: stele, 2 worker...
- Religion: 1st pantheon - earth mother, 2nd religion Tithe, Religious community, Swords to P, IP
- Tech: mining, writing, Optics, Edu (t114), ST (t166), Radio, Fertilizer, Plastics (t214)
- t67 met everyone
- ToA (t72!!), NV (t78), HG (t95!?!?!?!), Oracle, boro, HG, FP, LToP, PT, Taj Mahal, Red Fort, Brandenburg, Christo, Hubble, Sidney
- planted 3 academies
- always rush bought the science buildings asap
- Oxforded into Rennaisance: that one was very stupid!! I followed my habit of OCC oxford into Astro to get a fast observatory, because in my OCC maps I always reroll until I have a mountain...well doesn't apply to this one ;) I realized this a few turns before, but I couldn't delay Rennaisance due to the next SP coming in and wanting to open rati asap. So with the research "wasted" on compass I had to use Oxford and the best I could do was to use the free tech for Acoustics.

- Were you first to found the World Congress?
Not that I remember, but it's a little fuzzy. Ha ha :p I did have the most votes though every time.

- What Policy trees did you focus on?
All of Piety and Patronage, 2 from Tradition, finished out Honor later, as well as the first Commerce.

- Being OCC, how did you approach your Diplo strategy?
Grow the city fast as I could, try to tech my way to wonders like Forbidden Palace that I thought would be useful. I heavily focused on religion to take advantage of the city states that way.

- Discuss your Ideology choices. Did you choose any Ideology policies that specifically focused on City States? If so, which ones and why.
Went with Autocracy for late game warmongering. Figured it was my best bet to defend against the massive and threatening India and Japan.

- How many votes were needed before the United Nations was created?
I had 34 to win WC, I think there were about 12 more in the world...?

- Discuss any thoughts on the settings or map size. Did you enjoy the small archipelago map?
Loved the map! Really fun settings and had a blast this game.

- Were you first to found the World Congress?
Yes, beelined to it so that went well!

- What Policy trees did you focus on?
Tradition, then a mix and match, should have been more focused and do all Rati quicker. 3 policies plus opener in Patronage for CSS lovin. Then had culture absolutely overflowing so did what was useful of Freedom (did it mostly to get the increased +4 yield per specialist tile), all of exploration.

- Being OCC, how did you approach your Diplo strategy?
Growing as fast as possible, finding the right lux for love the king day, teching to the right technologies. Apart from that I don't really know what I'm doing. I need to watch a walkthru (not a full on lets play, too long) to see at what stages I need to time things right.
Japan also fwd settled me and sneak attacked me but I easily killed that city then claimed the oranges with a GG citadel. Got the others to embargo and DOW on Japan that was the bully of the game so that stopped him from expanding more, he didn't have the economy or happiness for it (he had -35 for ideology).
In the first world leader vote at turn 311 I was 1 vote from victory. I think it had to do with accidentally allowing a world religion that wasnt mine. Oops.
By the end I was jut pressing next turn for like 50 turns at least.

- Discuss your Ideology choices. Did you choose any Ideology policies that specifically focused on City States? If so, which ones and why.
Freedom. No not really special city state focus, I emphasized the higher paying trade routes and just bought off city states that were switching allegiance. Had all my spies in different city states.

- How many votes were needed before the United Nations was created?
Dont know or remember lol.

- Discuss any thoughts on the settings or map size. Did you enjoy the small archipelago map?
Really fun map and easy location since the main bullies of the game were too far away to get anything done against you.

Yes.

- What Policy trees did you focus on?
Tradition, then Patronage until Rationalism became available.

- Being OCC, how did you approach your Diplo strategy?
Went for science lead, then eliminated 3 civs so reaching Penicillin was enough to trigger the World Leader vote.

- Discuss your Ideology choices. Did you choose any Ideology policies that specifically focused on City States? If so, which ones and why.
Took freedom. I wanted to eventually take the +influence for trade routes policy, but once I got that far I was allied with everyone anyway so didn't bother.

- How many votes were needed before the United Nations was created?
35

- Discuss any thoughts on the settings or map size. Did you enjoy the small archipelago map?
Yes, it was fun!

I made some rather unnecessary mistakes:
1st off, never got around to build any fishing boats. Might have grown a bit faster with my 3 fish (I settled on the hill).
2nd, and even though I had discussed it in the announcement thread, I kind of forgot about it and thought it would be enough to kill just 2 civs. I got Dido rather elegantly eliminated by Japan and her last city was finished off by an allied city state (so no warmonger penalty for me). Had to kill Siam myself though, and afterwards everyone hated me. Only afterwards did I realize that I'd still have kill one more, and I had just 16 turns or so to go after Gandhi who had 3 cities and great wall.
Even though everyone denounced me, I still got Japan and Morocoo to team up on and kill Gandhi, I didn't have to take a single city of his myself (though I helped to soften them up). Morocco eventually DOWed me but was never a real threat.

Last couple of turns went like this:
t239 - India eliminated
t240 - researched penicillin -> atomic era
t241 - host vote
t246 - world religion (had world ideology and forbidden palace already)
t256 - won

Which brings me to my 3rd and almost fatal mistake: Totally forgot to DOW Japan before the world leader vote. When I checked a couple of turns earlier, he had over 4000 gold so could have easily spoiled my victory!! But I was lucky, he had somehow manged to spend all that gold on something else and let me win :D

Ugh, Absolutely miserable performance. I was beat to my first 5 wonders, by a turn or two. Very annoying.

Anyway, was dominant at the end. Could have won domination victory, and I started just fighting people for the last 50 turns because I was bored. Will update more later.
