Religion was very important. I had a nice stream of GS to bulb in my push for Information Age. Also, I took Swords into Plowshares and Religious Community, which gave me four powerhouse cities. As for spies, I used them initially to steal tech. Amazing that England with their extra spy never caught me, and never gave me a warning to stop spying. After Globalization, I used them for WL votes.
The map was helpful, in that it pretty much kept Rome and America out of my land during the war. It was a hindrance, as it took a very long time to find all the civs. Anther way it helped was the amount of later game strategic resources the CS had. I ended the game with stockpiles of coal and aluminum, from CS. Something I very rarely have in my regular games.
Emperor is my everyday play level when I want to play and finish a game in one evening. So, it wasn't very difficult to keep on plan, despite the two DoWs.
I loved the immediate trade routes of the advanced start game, and being able to open rationalism turn one.I was surprised at the lack of AI expansion. I was disappointed in the AI play, even more lackluster than ancient start Emperor. Eventually my finish time came down to managing when I received free techs from Rationalism, Oxford and GS bulbing. I sure I could have done that better, and probably knocked off one WC period and finished maybe 20 turns faster. In all, I did enjoy the advanced start. I may play some more advanced starts to figure the best tech path and free tech sequence to get a faster finish.

Continuing from my Opening Action report. My Worlds Fair proposal passed and I won. Used the collected GW to finish out Freedom to the Treaty Organization tenet. Getting the Volunteer Army tenet ended the wars with Rome and America. They each offered up a city, but I took them for as much gold/GPT as I could instead. While that was happening Germany wiped out China.
The second WC I was able to pass World Religion by myself. That set me up for the end game. I mismanaged my sequencing of Oxford and GS bulbing. I missed triggering the WL vote before the second WC. The rest of the game was clicking end turn while monitoring my CS levels. Germany did throw a scare my way with completing Apollo Program with about 20 turns to WL vote, but he never built a spaceship part.
