To me it looks like the gunner was patterned after the Spanish American War era troops. Especially with the beige forage cap and dark blue shirt.
I like the way it looks, and is a very good addition for that era.

As far as size goes, firaxis cannons and cannoner are real smalle compared to the Rifleman and other units. But, they look stupid and I've completely removed the Firaxis cannon in favor of Aalgo's, of which there are about a half dozen, all of consistant scale (larger than firaxis's cannonner, he looked like a midget's midget). So try matching it up with one of them (like the hotchkiss gun)

I thought I brought that up already..
Artillery or machine gun, shouldn't make too much difference as Aalgo's cannoner's are almost rifleman (or machine gunner) size.
