Winter Vacation Ideas

Generally temperatures in Andalucia now at winter are generally around 15ºC at day and 5-10º at night. So it is relatively nice for visiting monuments etc, but you are not going to beach (if you thought so), that for sure.

Thanks for the info. :D

I think Andalucia will be my destination if I get my vacation time off around September - November. Other than that I might look for somewhere a bit warmer. I wasn't too worried about beaches. They're nice to look at and even to swim at once or twice but that's about it for me.

I'm also not too worried about money. Seeing as it's leave from a tour of duty I get my (and the wife's) plane ticket bought for me by the military. As well as a certain amount of money for "lodging" and other such things. Lodging can mean a hotel or a cruise or even an all inclusive resort.

My biggest worry, really, is that I get the military to pay for a 5 star hotel for myself and then i'm stuck paying a lot of money for food and alcohol where i'm at or moving around to eat a lot. All inclusive does sound nice but i'd only do it if it was within easy reach of other stuff and not just free rooms, booze and food.

The wife mentioned she'd like to do a trip to Scotland or something and i'm all for that ... In the summer. September it wouldn't be so bad. I think the best bet would be somewhere in the Southern hemisphere for December - February. Maybe New Zealand?

As the title suggests i'm trying to think of some Winter vacation ideas for next year. I have no idea when exactly. It will fall in between early October and early February I think. It will be three weeks long when it happens.

What i'm looking for is someplace at least half decent warm, half decent for drinking and having fun (I don't like clubs or that scene) and some place with a lot of other interesting things to check out (historical, museums, nature...). I also don't want to be trapped in one small place or one city.

Places that come to mind:

Europe:

Southern Spain (Seville, Cordoba and Granada)
Sicily (Palermo, Syracuse and ...?)
I don't think I want to go to Greece. If I did it would probably be Crete. I did enjoy Cyprus when I was there ... But that was mostly because I had a bunch of friends to share the experience with.
Obviously wanting to keep it Mediterranean here.

South America

Buenos Aires (It's warm? Bit of history. I don't know much about it)

Oceania

Australia (somewhere South East or East coast I guess)
New Zealand (Not sure)

I'm most interested in Europe to be honest. But i'm definitely open to any ideas anyone has. Anyone from Europe want to recommend anything there?

For Oceania, try going to French Polynesia or Fiji. For Europe, i'm guessing you want to stay on the Mediteranean, Greece or Southern Spain imo. I get bored of southern italy very quickly for some reason.

Elsewhere, i'd vacation in the Caribean/Central America. Try going for the islands between Venezuela and Puerto Rico like Antigua or St. Lucia or Barbados. Do not go to Trinidad, it is a buisness island, not a vacation island. Costa Rica is also very nice.

If you really want fun, then go to California. San Francisco, to be exact.

See how absolutely essential it is to invent the holosuite? Come on, all you engineers, get cracking!

I'd sure enjoy Scotland. And I've always wanted to see Venice. All I know of New Zealand is that Xena: Warrior Princess was filmed there; if the climate was warm enough for the cast to run around in their Amazon outfits, it ought to be warm enough for a couple of vacationing Canadians! :D

Lord of the rings was filmed in new zealand too. Oh, and you can go zorbing there.

Out of curiosity, where would you guys go if someone gave you $10,000 to spend on a vacation that had to be during the Winter months?

Edit: Vacation has to be three weeks though. No blowing it in a casino in one night or something. :D

New Zealand Average during the Summer there is around 14 degrees.

Define "winter months?" I've always wanted to ski in the alps.

Go on a backpacking tour through either Europe or South America, until I run out of money. Probably after more than 3 weeks though, as I'd only use the money for food & drinks, with accommodation and transport very cheap if planned well.

Ehh... Say October 1st to January 31st. I know it's not the traditional Winter months but it's what I have in mind.

I'd extend it to the end of March. That way we can include March Break, and many countries climates (particularly in Central, Caribean and South America) are pretty similar throughout those months.

Hey, i'm trying to steal your guys' ideas here! I won't be able to go anywhere at that time. But for the sake of dreaming include whatever months you want.

I would plan an itinerary around as many science fiction conventions as I could fit into the time frame and monetary limits (I know how to do these on a budget! ;)). Preference would go to WorldCon, but if that happened to be at the wrong time of year, I'd make do some other way.

Or I'd go to the Winter Olympics. Location is not important, except I wouldn't feel safe on the highway to Whistler, B.C. yet...

Well, that lets out the 2010 Olympics, then. :(
