They don't look any better than mine.

I think this screenshot is just to illustrate the beauty of the modern age to people who haven't played Civ.

Whoever was playing when that screenshot was taken obviously can't find the worker build road button. It's going to take that infantry in the lower left corner 50 turns to get to wherever hes going.

Arent those cities quite close? I mean, there are only two blocks between them.
