What happened and how did I get beaten so badly.

They can't pop out more than 1 unit per city per turn. It would be interesting to load a autosave from a few turns back and use the worldbuilder to see what they really had. No doubt Gilgamesh already had a large stack running around somewhere.

    Bonus culture against vassal?

At the moment both cities can't revolt, because they are outside the culture radius of a Byzantine city. However, as soon as Constantinople or Adrianople pop their borders, you can get revolts again if you don't have enough troops in Thessalonica or Trebizond.

What's wrong with Evora? There really aren't that much mre good spots around, since I don't have ironworking yet, and can't settle the junge. The marble spot isn't very good. Since Joao is so good at expanding, it's important to get some commerce going too, the riverside cottages in the capital...

Distance maintenance is lower on huge maps. The cities only pay 1.7 and 1.5 gold in distance maintenance. Maintenance due to number of cities also grows more slowly. Both cities only pay 1.2 gold in number of cities maintenance. The floodplains city is connected to the rest of my empire...

I think this is a reasonable opening You can see 4 cities here that were settled by 1560 BC. these are the core of the empire, settled fairly close and all of them next to a food source. Except for these, there's also a city between the cow and the 2 golds in the north and a city in the...

    First post and Game Walkthrough!!

I think sailing here is vital to get international trade going and also connect your own cities. It's much better than building a 20 tile road in the wilderness with which costs an enormous amount of worker turns and also upkeep for units outside your territory. Barbarians can also destroy the...

I've played this game for years, and I'm still terrible

It helps a lot if you can attack earlier. I killed off Zara starting from your first save in 975 BC. He had no archery. I had built 8 Jaguars, so it was massive overkill. By then I had alfabet, so I could see that Ramesses had no archery either. I killed off the Egyptians in 550 BC using 2...

    Immortal/Large/Hannibal--1000 AD--seek advice.

You seem to be ignoring resource trades. There's gold and wine available. I thinks curassiers would have been better. However there's a red fist behind his name and you have a 0.2 power ratio. I'd still have changed to confucianism as soon as it was available.

    Darius on Deity walkthrough

He did move the settler one east. There must have been a forest on the tile where the city is now, and there's already a turn of production in a worker, so that's why it's turn 2 now. Since the second gold was visible, and the scout was sent west and there is nothing interesting there, this...

    Advancing to Monarch

You're busy going broke. You'll end up in a strike before you have your axe army ready. Both Boudica and Ramses are much too far away for an axe rush. Horse archers might work better, but you'll get the tech too late with your low science. I wouldn't like teching construction here and going...

Some help on my city placement?

With huge/marathon settings, and the enormous amount of land to the east I'd build it every time. The barbs will come with spears axes and swords, before that is filled in, and a few axes won't cut it for defense, and fog-busting it all is hopeless. The only problem is that on...

    Need help with stratedy

You can't fill the map with non-overlapping cities. Your method leaves unworked terrain, even unworked resources (fish on the east coast, wines north of london) Even if I settle further away because of resources or land-grabbing, I'll fill in the space later. One problem of big cities, it...

[Geek] Conversion to current values in Civ

You get about 1550 beakers for a great scientist bulb. In my last game I teched education in 10 turns at turn 126. Bulbing takes only 6 turns off. The bulbing beakers don't have a prerequisite bonus, so they're only worth 1/1.2 = 0.833 normal beakers = 1291 beakers. The city made about...

    Calling on black magicians

You can still get out of this. The first thing to do is to delete a lot of extra warriors and axes. you have 20 axes and 10 warriors, for wich you pay 21 gold/turn. You don't need fogbusters when you are whipping axes everywhere. Axes that aren't close to the front also get deleted or used as...
