Maybe knick Europa Universalis 4's attrition/manpower to punish stacks of doom - you can push a big stack together for a one off battle, but without supplies they'll soon start starving and you'll lose men? Anyway 1 upt has to go.

I'm quite interested if there are any people who have changed their mind also - I haven't played again properly in nearly 2 years. I tried to play after one of the major patches but as soon as I started a game and waited 20 secs for a turn to process all the memories of 1 minute late game turns...

Nope, if I play a normal game of Civ4 BTS it takes around 24 hours of game play - and that's when the turn time is < 10 seconds. I can't slow that down, maybe if I was doing something else with my life, like writing a book, or working on a project, I may be able to take the occasional glance...

The problem we have is that new processor cores are not becoming massively more powerful as such, the likes of Intel are just adding more cores to each processor for multitasking and for new apps which can use more than a single core at once - I believe Civ4 is built to only ever use a single...

This thread is so tempting... But I won't, I'll put it in the rant thread. In the mean time I'll continue not playing this game any more while still being casually enraged by the state of it :shifty:

Years ago when I was playing Civ2 on a Playstation1 I would take such waits on the chin - now any more than about 10 seconds and I go nuts. As I said some of the mods out there for BTS are great and interesting in early game, it's the late game slow down that breaks them - I just can't wait...

What's the performance like on big maps / late game? I've struggled with some of the other mods even on an i7 machine - I don't think the game engine was built to cope with some of the bigger additions.

My lazy one size fits all strategy is: Choose Civ which starts with Mining. Keep respawning map until my capital is close to lots of forests. Build worker while researching Bronze Working. Use first worker to hurry second and third worker by chopping down forests. Build a settler...

I used to play it on an old Acer One netbook (Intel Atom 1.6ghz, 2gb ram) and it ran ok on smaller maps but struggled once we got into the later game with huge maps. That was one of the first netbooks out though, I think modern ones should handle it much easier.

I haven't played this game really since late 2010 despite still playing BTS on a weekly basis. I really hope they fix it this time, but I'm going to hold my money back to see if it converts any other critics into lovers. I am still pretty angry at paying the money for original unusable game...

So... I haven't played this awful game in 2011 yet, has the patching made it much much better or do I still stick with CIV4 BTS?

Spending a Friday night home alone, with a decent bottle of Vino. Is it worth trying Civ5 again, has it improved a lot with patching since I last played about November last year? Thinking about not risking it and just going with a game of BTS.
