    I have to agree with Jarrod. The Sea tiles to the North are the determining factor. If there is one or more resource out there I would make two cities. One on that North Coast and a second to the South of your Settler. The exact positions would depend on the positions of the resource/s.

    You don't even have to raze every city you take. Raze the bad ones and keep the useful ones. Some will have Wonders you want or be good to add to the war machine. Don't build up your culture in your cities. That will stop their cultural boandaries from growing and taking up more land...

    I have to say that it makes things easier as well. At lower levels you are probably out-teching the AI, so it is not as useful. In higher levels it can help you stay even with the AI.     Yes you can have multiple Defensive Pacts. When you declare war on someone it will break all of your Pacts though.

    The best use of a culture bomb is after you take cities. Save him until after you attack and have taken some cities. Drop the bomb and the city is out of rebellion and you have the territory under your control now.

    Pottery or BW?

    I'm going to go with BW as well. Your city has to grow before Pottery really gets useful, so you have some time to burn. Time I use getting BW.
