Can you play without a disc?

If you want to play local multiplayer, you only need one disc. It only checks to see if the disc is in when you first start the game. One of you starts the game until you get to the main menu, then just take the disc out and put it in the other computer. No fancy tricks, no special programs.

    Holy Roman Empire

I think you might be able to get some synergy from Pro and Imp if you fight a defensive war. Spread some landsknechts out to protect your tiles from being pillaged, Pro-longbows keep your city safe, and your SoD harvests invaders for experience. For extra wackiness, take all those generals...

    Forts

You don't need a single space chokepoint to get a positional advantage with a fort. Any time the enemy can only come at you from one direction, space out a couple forts in the area. You don't need to block off the route, what you want is to force any approaching army to walk NEXT to a fort. A...

    ALC Game 18, Take 2: Spain/Isabella

The Pacific Northwest is not the Northwest Territories... The PNW extends well up into British Columbia, at the very least. It's about as Canada as it is the US.

    AI workers

Thinking a little more, this time from the perspective of the AI civs. What if we took my improvement designation idea, and then let the AI have access to it. The AI should make plenty of workers, at least 1 per city, and they default to automated behavior. The AI would not designate all...

    AI workers

This is pretty close to an idea I had a while ago. I think the interface for worker AI should be rethought, not just the AI itself. The way I see it, your worker needs come in two basic types: 1) You need certain things built/chopped in a certain order, and every single turn matters. 2)...

Anti-Tank... how can they be so powerful?

It's a good thing that anti-tank is available from a cheaper tech than tanks are, but I think it's unfortunate that it comes from Artillery, which is one of the must-have techs. I think it would lead to more interesting gameplay if anti-tech came from some side path. If you're the tech...

    ALC Game 17, Take 2: Russia/Peter (BtS)

I think you want one city on the space that the scout started on, but it doesn't need to be your first city. Moving the settler one space to the east will still give it a nice variety of food to choose from, but unfortunately we have no idea yet what else you'd have. Still, there's plenty of...

Managing growth - what is it good for?

Going over the health cap isn't a big deal. It'll slow growth, but so what? Going over the happiness cap isn't that big a deal, either. If your happiness cap is, say, 4, you can have 4 productive workers, or go over the cap and have 4 productive workers and an angry worker. You'll still have...

    A Better AI.

A fix I'd like to see for that is to have the AI civs tend frame their requests for help as trades. If the AI offers you even a nominal cash incentive to join their war, then there wouldn't be a diplo penalty for refusing. Ideally, the AI would tend not to demand aid unless they're backed into a...

    Weird deserts

The short and not-exactly-right-but-sorta version is that winds tend to go from west to east. Winds push clouds. Clouds form over oceans, get pushed to the east, bump up against the mountain ranges, and build up on the windward side. So, is anyone else hoping they come up with some variation...

    Weird deserts

Depends on the mountain range, and it's also possible for rivers to flow into desert regions, they're still deserts. As any SMAC player should remember, mountains cause rain to build up on the windward-side, and the lee side is dry.

    City Health Problems

Also, don't bother building health buildings unless you know you're going to need it. Actually, I disagree. That .4 unhealthiness is -.4 food IF you're at the health cap, but the flood plain is +1 food whenever you work it. So the trick here is to work those flood plains. They should be your...

Military unit building help for noob

I mostly do the same thing, unless I'm running Hereditary Rule and trying to grow my cities. Even then, you want just enough troops to get the happiness level you need, and no more. Lately, I've been practicing my warmongering, so most of the time I just build and build troops, forming them...

Managing workers the ADD way. Don't automate!

That's a good point that I forgot to mention, don't be afraid to snag a worker from his appointed rounds and change him to a more important job. Fortunately, since he's doing exactly what you told him to do, it should be easy to find a worker when you need him! That's the other major downside to...
