I've read around on the forums and I've found that others have had these mythical alliances with AI.
My problem is that I have never seen the option listed. Is it only available in custom games/multiplayer? I only really play standard games.

If you own the holy city of a religion, I think you get to see squares that the religion is spread in, don't you? It may have to be your state religion too. I read it somewhere.
In 1.09, I've seen people vote WAIT and get overrulled by majority. In this case, it was 5 CONTINUE vs. 1 WAIT, and the game continued, dropping the disconnect and supplanting him with AI.
It does add something to the game to turn that off. During the early time periods in the world, nations didn't know the relative power of neighboring nations, or really much more than just their names anyway. The idea of having a relative cultural/builder score constantly on the screen...
If the locations change, it doesn't mention it in the tech descriptions. I'm pretty sure I've upgraded from warriors to axemen outside of cities, and it's pretty difficult to get lower in tech than that. I'd go with "One can always upgrade units anywhere in one's territory", but I may be wrong.
It's a -5 to diplomacy if I raze enemy holy cities? Haha! That's great!
I'm going to burn every founding city that I can from now on. What a great way to purposelessly spite the enemy before killing them.
Geez, some people play in such a regimented manner. I just screw around and research techs on whim and impulse. Maybe that's why I'm stuck on Warlord and you're on immortal :)
It sounds like an excellent strategy. Doesn't founding three or four religions irritate you, however? You can't...
