Build a theatre the first thing I do, perhaps even buy it if possible. If the circumstances allow you, put an artist specialist in there to boost culture. You can combine the two with moving the culture slider up one notch too. Oh, and make sure you take out the other cities that apply cultural...
Hmm, am I the only one who always build a theatre in my newly founded/conquered cities? I do this to expand my borders and thus getting access to more resources quicker. I don't believe I build that many courthouses at all, but then of course I tend to switch to State Property as soon as I can...
I love the fact that your units are more valuable now in the sense that they take longer to build and can be useful longer before they become obsolete. The only drawback is that the first 2000 years or so can be very dull, since all you do more or less is press Enter and wait for your worker to...
I always play on Terra maps, and I always look forward to invading the new continent and steal a couple of well developed cities. I've only seen them build a wonder once though (The Colossus), but that was really interesting. I wish I had a screenshot of it!
Dark Helmet, I must say I agree with you 100%. I strongly dislike the fact that I as a player get punished whenever I act just like the AI acts. I would love to see a new diplomacy system that treated the AI and the human player the same way.

I don't automate my workers, except for when it's time to build railroad. As soon as I've researched Railroad I set most of my workers to Build Trade Network.
Works like a charm!
I've found that if you don't start with building a worker your infrastructure will be sub par in the early game. Hooking up those important resources is crucial to your capital's growth, so I'd say that generally you should start with a worker, and then chop a settler.
I chose Financial since I really like the strategy involving cottages + Kremlin wonder. Industrious is a close second though. The Civilization series to me has always been a lot about the Wonders of the World, and whenever I manage to build one I always get that good feeling of satisfaction in...
