Ehm, it is very much possible to outproduce the AI on monarchy, due to, what I call: the stupidity factor. The AS just isn't as efficient with his recources as a good human player...
Try posting a savegame, that way the experts here (I'm not arrogant enough to count myself as one ;) ) can tell you how to improve your game instead of just giving general advice.
NOT true. Try researching one of the cheaper techs (Pottery, Ceremonial burial), and build enough roads. If you have a river near your capital you can have your first tech well within 20 turns.
Single citizen cities? That sounds like a waste of settlers to me
Or to get the AI to wage war...
I play Emperor when I want a challenging game and Monarch when I want to do some seious ass wuppin'. I have won DemiGod once, but it's to difficult a level to really enjoy playing. I tried Sid once: Boy did I ever get my behind kicked! Ouch.... Definitely NOT going to try that level again...

Yes. They are patheticaly eager to trade world maps, even if there is little knowledge off the world to be gained from trading it.
From what I've seen, an AI will trade another AI techs for world map (but you would be ripped off shamelessly buying the same tech....)
I once tried that mod as Germany on chieftain. It was kind of funny to unite Europe well before 1 AD, but I quit after slaughtering the Chinese. My empire had become way too big and a single turn cost me over an hour to play....
