138. You can have an army of mounted units without having any horse, but they'll fight less eagerly cause they miss their beloved horse.

I also think it's a bug. I had more than a game screwed by setting my capital on production focus early game and losing 1 or 2 citizens. This happens especially when barbs are around and block tiles: the governor doesn't replace them correctly. Lame bug.

I think it is not possible to avoid. Best thing you can do is to make sure other people is at war among them most time possible by bribing top/warmongering leaders into war against other weaker leaders and if you can against them.

Interesting views. I agree mainly. I usually do it like this, specially in MP. I settle on top of luxuries in my first wave, so I can settle much faster without falling in negative happines. However, with the new patch changes, it is possibly much less strong now as city tile has been so nerfed...

Just finished an immortal game. I was able to bribe people into war several times. It seems it is quite easy to bribe the strongest leader to war with others. I wanted people to DoW germany, cause they where a bit ahead of me, but they wouldn't. The other way around, was a piece of cake...
