Spies are incredible units. The ability to scout out rival territory and troop placement makes waging warfare a lot easier. Especially if you want to pull sneaky amphibious raids. The only down side is spending the time to build the Scotland yard.
Unlike Spiceant's crusading Japan I use religion for diplomacy. I nearly always end up joining one of the "religious blocs" in the early game. This makes tech trades easier... and if it does come to war I know I'm crushing the heathens!
Well generally speaking against large stacks be sure to use catapults. They'll almost certaintly die but you can weaken many units in the stack in order to improve your odds for success. Speaking of which...

I'm nearly certain it's the primary factor that aggresive nations consider when contemplating war. So keep your power rating high with a large number of troops (keep 'em current too!)
