    How to pillage effectively?

    I tend to send a couple of infantry along and use them to defend my pillagers and soak damage. Seem to work better for me than pure-cav expeditions.

    Ehm. A little afraid to ask, but - you do know of bombarding? From the advent of catapults, til the enemy has gunpowder units, I seldom lose a single unit in city attacks (not counting counterattacks). Cannons come way too late though, so there are a couple of hard years with gunpowder but...

    Movement after attack

    If your attack is along a (friendly) road, it will only use 1/2 (or 1/3 later on) movement point. Basically, an attack on a location takes as many movement points as an unopposed move to that location would have taken.

    I cannot find that the discussion thereof is prohibited by the forum rules, only the crack/s and links to them: If the mere discussion of cracks/noCDs is prohibited (perhaps an easier line to draw), it should say so, in my opinion.

    FWIW, I never use automation in my cities, and I have never had this problem, pre- or post-patch. Are you positive that you have no automation options enabled?

    Well, and for us who think Epic is still way too fast, there are mods. Use with aggressive ai, or at higher difficulty though, as you effectively get more time to conquer and expand.
