I gave a new produced machine gun unit 3x first strike upgrades, and placed it in the city I knew Ghenghis would attack with all he had the second I declared war. Mostly I did it because it was well defended, so it was mainly for the fun of it.
It turned out that single unit destroyed about 15...
A mix of all the above, I'd say.
Some good points have already been made.
What I do:
Begin building new units (maces, etc.) with my production cities, and upgrading a few of my old ones.
I upgrade those that have 10/11 XP. I do not upgrade those that have 9, or 15/16. I then attack with my...
Standard size map, prince and monarch.
I've had some success with taking 2 major cities from the AI, then sueing for peace ASAP. Then continue with this untill the AI is wiped out. Usually gives me 3-5 techs from a 8-16 city AI.
Sometimes its necessary to wipe out 1 of the border-tundra-cities...

They are very circumstantial like everything else in the game.
Spies.
Steal plans, and find their 2 most productive cities.
Nuke the two spots where you hurt the most units, and nuke the 2 best productive cities.
Starting a war this way helps a lot.
oh, and btw.. The UN+Nukes can still be used pretty effectively! Catherine Cottage Spam + Nuke + UN and you...
Subs with visibility upgrade stationed in strategic spots.
Jet fighters used for recon - This in particular gives you a huge advantage - as you usually can make a 2-turn bombingrun on any ships before they come close enough to land their troops.
I reloaded a lot in the beginning - but learned a lot from it.
It happens very seldom now that I reload..
Sometimes I go back 10-15-20 turns and replay them - to see if I can avoid some sort of disaster. Then it usually happens I play those 10-15-20 turns 4 or 5 times.. I've learned A LOT...
