If you're still looling for a good history of Rome, there's a book by Robin Lane Fox called an epic history of greece and rome. Lane Fox makes both time periods melt together easily and smoothly. I hated Greek history... then got that book cause of the Roman bit, looked in the Greek bit and went"Whoa." That's how good he is. Have fun!
