    Since they are religous and scientific, all the culture producing city improvements (temples, libraries, etc) are half price. Very handy ability.

    It really does depend on difficulty level I think. I used to get lots of cultural conversions. At harder difficulty levels I rarely see one, even when I move my capital to be adjacent to the border.

    isolated situation? I play a peaceful strategy on diety and I cannot fathom winning when starting isolated. By the time I was upgrading to pikemen the rest of the world would be looking at riflemen. If I don't start where I can get contact from at least 2, preferably 3 civs, I restart.

    Playing Portugal - Age of Discovery

    I played as Spain, and the first thing I did (other than start a settlement with my starting settler) is kick portugal off my peninsula. Getting a free settler every 5 turns from the old capital of portugal made it all worth it. :)

    I ahve played a couple diety games that I won. In one of them noone declared war on me. In the other, I paid the rest of the world to ally with me against the agressor. It was a pangea, so everyone had access. The aggressor was promptly crushed.
