According to the Strategy Guide and the Pre-Release Specification Charts, there are 6 different periods / eras. However, I don't understand what they are supposed to do. Are there any benefits when you change eras, or is it just letting you know how far you have advanced along the Tech Tree?

After playing a few sample starter games, suddenly I can no longer see the global view where I can rotate the globe. It worked when I first installed it but not any longer. Is there some keystroke or setting I may have set by accident that turns off the global view?
