I have read so many different posts about WLTKD now that I am not really sure what is true. What effect does WLTKD actually have during the game? Is there any real advantage to using the luxury slide to create the WLTKD situations, or, is it simply something people do because it makes them feel good to see the fireworks over the city? Any explaination about the WLTKD feature would be greatly appreciated.

Check your pedia under Game Concepts. Cuts in half the conversion change, reduces corruption and lowers the propaganda sucess rate.
In short it is a good thing and can be used as a means of getting production for a key item done sooner in core cities with some corruption.

As per VMXA, but it only cuts corruption for shields, doesn't effect commerce.

I use it in far cities with high corruption. I remove a few population to reach WLKD.
Good to reach 4/5 shields per turn to start building Temple / Library for culture or Courthouse

WLtKD in a city has the same effect on corrupted shields as does having a courthouse in that city. Other effects as noted above.
