That's not extreme at all, I've done that many times too. It's possible to have a good relationship with AIs for a while, at least with leaders less prone to backstab. My problem (and I think many others' problems) with the system is that this relationship is highly likely to turn sour later...

To be fair Steam client doesn't make this information clear. It doesn't display the version number (you have to launch each game to find out their version numbers), and it doesn't allow you to manually trigger a check for updates (e.g. You know a patch is out, so you go online and start Steam...

Also you only culture bomb once every 10 turns (for standard speed). AIs also take culture bombing as a grave offense, even if you only take a single tile of resource-less desert from them, and will likely denounce you and declare war in short order.

In Civ5, a good neighbour is an eliminated neighbour. But I can usually stay relatively friendly with Gandhi, so he got my vote.

I think the problems are: 1. Pretty enough AIs won't accept 1-to-1 trades because they've accumulated sufficient player-hate 2. People have reported that AIs don't prioritize connecting additional luxuries.

You can also browse the mods forum - there's a great mod called "InfoAddict". It provides a lot of information that the vanilla game has but does not reveal to you, in a format similar to Civ4.

I've been warned by an AI about my troops near his borders. What really happened was his embarked worker (it could be a galley, I don't remember) was in my coastal city's border, and I had two destroyers guarding the city. The AI was from another continent, so I had no other troops near him...

It's gibberish even in Chinese... a random series of Traditional and Simplified Chinese characters (many rarely used in everyday speech) combined with some symbols here and there. Maybe looking at it as hex would mean something, but I'm in the middle of a system reinstall so I don't have a hex...

No idea, since I agreed with him. My guess would be it determines which upgrade Boone gets. They were on their knees for me, and I found out the whole camp respawns. You can no longer free the powder gangers, but you can kill more of them for good karma.
