Civ II - Hoover Dam is insane. Once you had Pyramids, your cities grew twice as fast as the AI, leading to wins. Colossus was amazing. Mike's Chapel is absolutely necessary is most games. Workshop allows Settler-Engineer, greatness.
Missing out on any of those wonders really sucked in that...
Trade tech = good thing, because you benefit yourself and one other player at the expense of everyone else in the game. I trade as much as possible, except if there's some wonder I need to build, or it is a key military tech that will allow them to match me on the battlefield.
It's -1 for 10 turns, and it's a decently big problem, but when you already have hit your happiness cap or exceeded it, it's a nice way to gain troops/needed infrastructure.
Also, I'm a big fan of the BW rush with Axeman, and Slavery + Chopping greatly increase the strength of any early game...
A few things I would like to point out:
Slavery is incredibly underrated here. That happiness cap can be hit very early and very quickly in the early game, where warring is also the most effective, and Caste System + Emancipation aren't going to be there yet. Food + Granary + Slavery = war...
Horde edge can be strong, but it's very hard to beat that well-placed Archer, plus if you give your opponent any time at all, they can crank out enough production to overrun you very quickly. I prefer going to a war with a decent tech edge, as well as a production advantage.
A short decisive war (especially early) wins enemy cities, allows to produce and fund more, and increases land size by a lot.
Very useful when you know the AI can steamroll you in Peace on the higher levels.
War Chariots and Immortals wipe any civ near you without copper off the map fairly quickly and fairly easily. Absolutely devastating.
But Fast Workers can give a very early quick edge too. They can allow you to get bronze/horses one or two turns quicker, their speed allows them work different...
I think Oracle is strong in certain builds, but Pyramids can be a game-breaker. As for Parthenon.... eh... I don't think it's as strong as the other two.
I don't believe Muskeeteer is completely useless. A very prevalent Writing/CS beeline will allow for a very quick Muskeeteer (before anything comparable starts showing up), and you can bring the speed of the Musketeer to bear and allow it to roll. Napoleon can play this beeline very well...
