Chariot archers drive me up the wall... but not when the AI builds them (I love seeing that). I hate when i rush build one (or rush buy one for lack of funds for a better unit) and am reminded of how useless they are. Weak ranged attack, and easy to destroy. Build composite bows instead.
lol. never outright quit but this is probably the #1 reason why I re-roll. I just find an auto save about 10 saves prior, then I maximize production in the city, maybe even chop down some trees.
Do you do the Tradition 4-city start thing? Try using Montezuma and fill out the Honor tree. Or Arabia and fill out the Liberty tree. Or a warmonger game with Japan.
Spain is fun. Do you ever use the conquistador to actually found a city? Seems like a waste of a great unit to me.
Emperor level/ standard maps / raging barbarians/ G&K
I played Montezuma and tried out the Honor tree. Once I filled it, I picked 3 polcies from Tradition, filled out the right side of Commerce, then completed Rationalism.
It took awhile (260 turns) but I finally won a domination game...
This works with frigates too. Pick a nearby CS, or a nearby weak AI, then power up your frigates. They're super powerful with Logistics, and super duper powerdul as upgraded battleships with Logistics.
my suggestion is manipulate the maps to maximize the strengths of the civ. England or ottomans on island, Iroquois in the amazon map, etc. that'll also give you some confidence.
yep, that's a problem. but you already need to suspend disbelief with the current system because Washington, Elizabeth etc didn't exist in 4,000 BC, and they then surving the entire game without aging. Like characters on Lost or something.
I always thought it was dumb that a leader survives for like 4,000 years. How about a succession of leaders? You start out with one leader, then as you go through different eras you choose a successor. Maybe give your successors different personalities, like +2% growth, or science, or attack...
solid advice here. only thing i'll add is, maybe focus on friending up with mercantinle CS. aside from the extra lux you get, you get extra happiness too when you become friends with them. Early game, the easiest way to do this is kill some barb camps that are pestering them.
