Do you have to connect your resources to a city with a road?

I just got the game and i was wondering, do you still have to build a road to all of your improvements?

I'm having problems reinstalling the game on my new computer. I can get the original Civ4 on there, but when I try to put Beyond the Sword on there, it gives me some kind of warlord error or something. Oh, and patch 1.74 doesn't work, it only wrecks everything.
