Finally tried to play one seriously - holy crap that was awesome!
I managed to amass a huge army of sea beggars! I feel like there was no need to build ranged sea units outside of the occasional sub - it was really fantastic, especially when upgraded!
The UA is really helpful vs. AIs - you can...
Speaking of resources, I kinda wish the bonus resources offer more that they can be traded, otherwise they're pretty useless when not being part of the active city tiles. Like say, cow resource add 2 food.
Oh and might as well ask it here, if I trade away my only Marble, the boosted Wonder...
I guess it's more of the inner machinations of the lux happiness that confused me.
I know for a fact that you retain 50% of the happiness boost when you trade your last lux copy. However, does the game assume that you still "have" it, i.e. that lux happiness boost from Commerce affects it still?
As far as I have noticed, if you denounced someone, especially if that someone is universally hated, before you wage war, you won't get the warmonger effect.
This is why I always turn off espionage, they tend to be more annoying regarding CS.
When fighting vs. CS-relying civs, I make it a point to save enough money, buy off nearly all of the CSes, then declare war.
Is there really an ideal way to play them? Only thing going for them is the polder UI and I guess the Sea Beggar is not bad. Their UA is really lackluster, and focusing their starting point on luxuries rather than strategic resources is kinda bad.
Korea and Babylon - I play them similarly but Korea for offense and Babylon for defense; I'm kinda slow at GP pumping so I'm not too good at Babs, but still scientific progress allows me to take over enemies easily
China - awesome UB and UU
Japan - the UA is very handy for warmongering
