But how does a Missionary and Prophet actually spread your religion? Do they have to just walk around or is there an action they can perform?

I'm confused about what to do with a Great Prophet and a Missionary outside of my territory. I don't seem to have any options for them. Do they do me any good just sitting in or near other Civs or City States?
