Not only does Civ involve a larger number of pieces then chess, but each player can also choose to move *all* of their units on *every* turn. That's an insane number of permutations compared to a game like chess.
If I've got 10 units and each unit could potentially move to 10 different...
Funny story... in my first game of Civ V I totally missed the fact that social policy cost increases as you build more cities. I was going for a Cultural victory, but my empire was fairly large - social policies were ridiculously expensive. My solution? Build more cities to generate culture...
There are two different quests to kill barbarians:
1) If a city state is being "plagued by barbarians" then you can gain influence by killing barbarian units which are within 1 tile of the city-state's borders. If the barbarian is more than 1 tile away then you get nothing. I *think* you...

Even when I'm warmongering I rarely go for Honor. I find that if I don't take advantage of early growth/economy bonuses from Tradition or Liberty then I fall behind in science too quickly. And with Liberty/Tradition you can still choose to leverage your increased growth toward building a...
I'm currently playing a game as the English, and the following chain of events occurred:
* I start building a scout at turn 1, as I frequently do.
* Scout finishes, finds some goody huts.
* One of the goody huts equips the scout with better weapons. Yay, now he's an archer!
* Fast-forward...
