Just reading this very long thread, and I wanted to make a small comment Elizabeths succesor was the king of Scotland, the son of Mary Stuart ( James I ?), so it was first under his rule that the two countries had the same ruler. EDIT: That did not mean the two countries became one...

Democracy. I like the extra income and reduced coruption. But war weariness can be a pain.
