    Resources, Proximity, and threat level. Unless the biggest threat is in a good starting location, I hold him off with a self-defense force while my army takes more productive lands. In my current game Monty is too scared to rush me for once.

    I make mine 5 spaces from the center tile and no less than 4 if I have to.

    What do you get at the start?

    Playing a few warlord/noble starts, I've found out that what you get depends on your starting location and your victory goals. Pottery helped build commerce which kept me from expanding too fast and going bankrupt. I also got a head start on researching techs.
