I am working my way up but one of the first things I learned is chop. There are a lot of threads on this so I won't go into it here. I would also avoid automated. They don’t always make the best decision on what to build. If you build a lot of cottages for the commerce they will change...

I try to get an archer in each city early in the game. The cities most likely to get attacked get one or two of the offensive units that are available (warrior at first then axman or swordsman). These would be cities on borders with other civs or near open areas that could get barb attacks...

I chose explorer. Usually by the time I can train one I have my exploring done with warriors or scouts. I never build Ironclads either.

Currently playing at Nobel level and I am always going for conquest/domination win. I am at war, building for war or planning war. Peace only to limit open fronts.

I play on and hone my military tactics. I like to see how quiclky I can dominate another civ. Panzer Blitz!!!
