So I'm playing Civ IV again for the first time in years. Back when I used to play regularly, I'd learned to use a feature that enabled you to drop fat crosses on the map to indicate where you wanted to build cities later. I loved that feature, but now I can't remember how to activate it. Does...
When it comes to the original topic of selling "lost cause" cities, I agree it is an effective move, yet one which seems very gamey and cheesy. I think it would be nice if the mechanics of the game were adjusted such that when you are at war, you can only "trade" cities with the Civs that you...
I wanted an easy game after my adventure with deity and targeted cultural from the start. On Noble I wasn’t very concerned about achieving the victory so I was free to focus on getting as early a win as possible. Or at least, do what passes for focusing on my part.
Settled on the plains...
Thanks for the compliment, kcd_swede.
It probably would have been better to wait. As I recall, I first check to see if I could release it as a vassal, and when I saw my only option was to give it to Saladin I figured, "why not get it over with?" What with all the unhappiness the city wasn't...
As usual I began the game by not turning on the autolog, but as memory serves, I settled on the SW plains hill on turn 3 after a bit of scouting around. My plan was to expand as best I could and see what opportunities arose. Nothing fancy, no risky shots at a wonder. I got a Work Boat out early...
I just tried demanding my vassal's only Oil. It's the only outright demand I've ever made of them, although I have made some trades with them. They declared war. :( So perhaps this was changed in BtS or via the Buffy MOD 3.19. Or maybe there are conditions under which a vassal can refuse even...
Settled in place and built the Great Wall. Only managed a few other cities before Alex declared on me. After Alex foolishly suicided his stack into my walled fortified hill city, I was able to capture Sparta (with the Copper to the SE). I lacked the strength to carry the war further and made...
At the start I suckered myself into heading south in search of non-frozen land, and ended up settling on the peninsula down there with only Fish and Dye for resources, but lots of flood plains and some hills I could mine....
... One month, roughly 32 hours of game play, and 500 turns later I...

Things went pretty much as planned for quite some time. I acquired all of the Patronage track except the bonus resources as quickly as I could, and spent my money on getting the 2 Cultural civs...
I come into this game hoping to play as peacefully as possible, and focus very heavily on culture. Im not going to try anything super-tricky like massive expansion followed by eliminating cities. In fact Im planning to keep my empire small and be peaceful if possible. But I do intend to...
I'm sure this has been addressed many times already, but I can't find it so here goes.
On the diplomacy screen listing for the civilizations you've met, there's a number. It appears next to the symbol for their civilization. What is it? Their score? Is it of any practical value?
