Edit: It turns out that Steam had not applied the Civ 5 patch yet. I restarted Steam and it patched Civ 5. Now I can set production in my city.
Yeah but using cows, pigs, and sheep as food (even prior to AH) is a no-brainer, whereas recognizing the value of horses takes a more sophisticated society.
Started a monarch game last night on Marathon speed and was eventually overwhelmed by barbarians. I just could not build units fast enough to defend my lands, much less scout outside my borders.
Does the Epic/Marathon game speed setting affect the barbarian spawn rates?

Well if you start on a continent with just one other civ, then I could see reasons to avoid giving them your religion. But if your land mass contains several civs and any of them have a religion, they will spread it to your neighbors if you don't get there first.
I'm going for a 20K culture win but my main Wonder city (size 12) is unable to build Shakespeare's, even though my forbidden palace city (also 12) can. wuwt?
