The Philistines were the main enemy of the Hebrews and then turned Israelites during the early kingdom for a time. It is believed they were a branch of the peoples known as the Sea Peoples, specifically, the Peleset.
The Sea Peoples were largely credited as a big factor in what is known as the "Bronze Age Collapse" which swept aside the ancient era of the middle eastern kingdoms and eventually led to the rise of Greek culture and classical antiquity.
