The Maya are an interesting civilization. Unlike the Aztecs and Incans, there was never a singular united Maya state, but instead a large number of independent states that often fought each other. Rather similar to the Ancient Greeks, in a way.
In the later eras, the Maya become the independent Central American nations south of Mexico and North of Colombia, but there is some overlap with the Aztecs/Mexico.
Also, playtesting them on Earth maps was a painful.
