Ok, I think it's time (past overdue actually) to get this idea out into the open. At Emperor level, the AI outpaces us in production (cheaper units/improvements), and science. Not to mention they trade amongst themselves more. The idea is to get a few more gpt out that we're paying for research, and put it towards trading techs. Currently, we're already at 10% research, which is a problem. We've been researching at a 40-turn-per-tech rate even at 100%. Obviously, it's not working. We need more cities, as our now 4 cities (1 more still in resistence) just can't keep up with the expensive techs. More cities mean more gpt (we need workers for roads!), and that gpt can go for buying techs.

Look at the first demogame. We could make Curufinwe salivate by getting 400gpt at or close to 0% research. In the 4-5 turns that we would gain a tech, we'd have 1600-2000g, which would be more than enough to buy a tech, leaving us with a surplus. Let's try to copy from our successes in the previous game. (those of us who have been there)

Excellent topic and spot on analysis, Chieftess! I wholeheartedly agree. It is very wasteful to research technology ourselves. Those resources are much better spent on production (luxury expense makes more citizens work) and building up the treasury. I'm not against research, per se, but the wacked math in civ 3 makes it a fools errand to do your own research on Emperor or Diety.

The thing to do is to change a single pop to a scientist to maintain the 40 turn research rate and aim at the techs the AI generally avoids.

I would have to agree, There is not enough cites to produce science to satisfy the pace. I beleve we should set the Sci rate to 0%. As Chieftess said, Even at 100% we have 40 tpt rate. Its becoming a waste of money to have the Sci at 100%. We should be putting our money to something productive. We should have done this a while back when the tpt rade was sliping higher. Remeber, Waste helps the Enemy, Conserve our Gold.

I also agree..... i wonder why i missed that point before as i normaly also do this in my games.... go to trade and capture!

0% Science might be advisable....

have we gotten a signel tech ourselves?

I think 0% research is fine right now. We need gold to help us in the war, but I believe once we get a good amount of cities and some librie built in those cities we should switch back to 10%.

I see your point CT. Although I don't like permenent decisions.

In regards to more cities, that is exactly what I'm trying to do with the build queues I've proposed. With the queues as the are proposed now, we would have:

In 7 turns - 2 Settlers, 3 Spears, 1 Worker, and 1 Sword in addition to what we have now.

In 15 turns - 2 more garrisoned cities, an additional 2 more Swords, and a Barracks in Tlaxcala.

While we are concentrating on Military production, I'm still looking at growth.

I suggest we take one of two courses until after we have discovered literature, since we are already almost half way there.

1. Leave science at 10%

2. Find a citizen to turn into a scientist, maybe in a captured city.

Option 2 is preferable, but may not be possible right now.

There is still some chance we could build the Great Library, which will, if nothing else, save us a whole lot of money. To build it, we absolutely have to get literature first. I suggest we continue our research until we either finish, or someone else starts the GL, which basically means we will not get it without a great leader.

I would be against having absoluely no research.

However, eyrei's proposal of having a citizen scientist would be excellent. If I'm not mistaken, this would net us the same amount of research, with a considerably smaller investment.

We should also start building for the Great Library ASAP! The wonder cascading will be starting very soon!

I agree with Chieftess. We should be comiting one of our cities to build the Great Library. We should also "Convert" citizens into Scientist :).

If we had more cities, it would be possible... But, we chose the early war path, and were stuck with 3 for much of the game.

Valhalla. Kuhkaff can do settler production, just let it get big enough. Im going to contact the governor and ask him what he would think about putting Valhalla on a palace prebuild until the GL roles around. Then, I feel (IMHO) that we could support expation with a combination of war and building from Kuhkaff while keeping the war machines on-line.
Suggestions? Comments? Cries of, "Hes got to be kidding me"?

General concensus is a 0% science rate is favorable at this time. The Domestic Leader should examine the tax rate for proper placement of our resources between happiness and cash. The Governor of Bohemia should identify which citizen will be turned into a scientist.

I never saw a poll postd over this....

Noone posted disagreement with this strategy, so technically, a poll is not necessary. If one had been, it should have been posted by the domestic department within a couple days of this discussion being opened.
