0xc0000005 error :S

Hello to all!

I have a tough problem under Win XP. When I try to start Civ3 (1.29F) I get a nasty 0xc0000005 error ("the application failed to initialize properly..."). I can push the OK button, and that's it. :S I tried to turn off DEP for Civ III - to no effect. I tried out different drivers for my video card - the problem still stays. The game works properly under win98, but it is messy to switch between hdds, since I can access the net only from this hdd. I hope there will be some solution for my problem, it is really frustrating.

Have you tried reinstalling? Also, a quick search on the error code leads to this website:

The most typical causes for the ‘0xc0000005: Access Violation’ error are: corrupt registry, malware, faulty RAM, faulty drivers, incorrectly written, installed or updated software and even Windows security features.

It has some solutions you might try, although (depending on whether you can get your CivIII fix or not) you may want to wait and see if anyone here has some advice.

Reinstalling doesn't help... I thoroughly googled this 0xc0000005-thing, and all the advices turned out useless. Maybe I give a try for some of the registry cleaners, but I think it is a different problem. Civ3 is the only program which makes my stupid XP crying "0xc0000005...".

Eureka! I was about to give up, and reactivate my old HDD, when I noticed that Civ3 needs OpenGL. Okay, Windows XP already has OpenGL drivers included, and my video card is capable of using OpenGL, so it should have worked without any further tampering. But I made a try: I copied the OpenGL drivers from the Civ3 cd to the Civ3 folder... And voilà: it worked! The readme mentioned that only in case of Win95 do we really need those files in the Civ3 folder, so it is a really strange thing what happened. Nonetheless, I am able to play Civ3 on XP.
