Got it downloaded and installed. Started a brand new newbie type game because I haven't play in awhile. No crashes so far, but several of the leaders I come across when exploring do not have their portraits showing. It is is a blank dark screen where the portrait should be.

After seeing all the other problems here I guess I'm fortunate but if anyone has seen this before and have it corrected I'd appreciate knowing how.

Download and install the latest patch. If that won't work, please post a screenshot and your system specs (processor, RAM, graphics card)

I reinstalled the game and the patch 1.61 and everything seems to be working OK now. I must of had a mod installed previously that was in conflict with the offical patch.

Crap!!! Maybe this should be an edit but this is frustrating. I spoke too fast that everything was OK. I now have the same problem. I am not good with screen shots but believe me it is just the portrait that doesn't show.

I have an AMD Athlon XP 2800, 2.07 Ghz with 2 gigs of RAM. My Graphics card is an ATI Radeon 9600 Series with current driver 8/241 and the system has Serive Pack 2 updated.

This is BS the new patch was not tested against major systems and graphics cards and this should be happening.

If you haven't already done so, in this order:
Empty your hidden \cache folder
Set "MemSaver = 1" in your civilizationiv.ini file. You will not be able to alt-tab anymore from Civ4; it's normal and not a bug.
Download and re-install the April 2006 version of DirectX 9.0c from Microsoft
In the Civilization IV game's options for audio set to Use System Config
In the Civilization IV game's options for video/display set
  • Your game's screen resolution to the same as your normal desktop, i.e. 1024x768
  • set antialiasing to 0
  • choose low/low/low for the next 3 choices
If you've EVER used any mod delete the custom assets folders, everywhere
If the issue persists attaching a dxdiag.txt to your post may be helpful. If you fix it, please post how.

Followed your instructions. I'm not sure about the hidden\cache folder so I emptied the Cache and Temp files for INTERNET connections. Anyway, I don't seem to have a portrait problem but after about 60 turns or so I crashed to the desktop. Attached is my dxdiag.txt. (I think)

Cache is in the hidden \application data\ subtree typically found at C:\Documents and Settings\<your login id>\Application Data\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization IV\cache. These are hidden folders so you may need to enable [Tools > Folder Option > View > Show hidden files and folders]in Windows Explorer to see them. This can have obsolete information regarding the game, xml, etc., so it's often recommended you delete it when you patch or make a change.
Via has new chipset drivers at www.viaarena.com that may not hurt.
Verify you're using the 4/6/2006 DirectX End-User Runtime as well. Version 9.0c has had files piled into it several times in the past year or so.
Nice computer really.
Beyond that, just imagine the world leader-wannabes are really, really ugly, and you're being spared their unpleasantness.
Good luck.

Well, I think I have it fixed. I still couldn't find the Hidden/Cache but that might be because I did a fresh install of CIV IV and then applied the 1.61 Patch. Anyway, followed everything except I set the 3 items in graphics to medium. I had a crash problem at low although it might not have been caused by that.

Thanks again
