I have to say, I dislike 100K games - spam out cities, then endless poprushing.
that said, I wanted to get a #1 slot!! So I found an empty 100K slot and went for it... Huge Deity
I just got a new computer (I've been running off a laptop for awhile) and it's nice - I can run mapfinder without it crashing, I can actually play Civ IV, but I haven't gotten into it - the zone in map is cool, but the 300 ft tall units are wierd, and it can handle huge maps!! On the laptop, interturns in the demigod SS game took a long time...
I wanted to write it up, cause I did some things that I had never done before and saw some things I had never seen before.
Map stats:
Huge, pangea, 60% ocean, 5B, wet, warm. I believe I turned off SGL's, as well.
Me:
Celts. Deity is tough, and I wanted a dominant early UU and Agri. Religious is nice, too, to reduce anarchy (it turned out to be a lifesaver, as I switched governments more than I usually do)
Opponents:
England, Scandinavia, France, Spain, Portugal, India, Rome. I picked civs without a dominant defensive UU. Why did I pick Rome? Cause I made a mistake. One other interesting thing is that I picked 4 commercial civs.
The start:
I ran mapfinder to get a bunch of start, and I found this one:
3 cows (a 4th is quickly visible). I created 3 more settlers before granaries, to get as many factories up as possible. Research plan was Myst/Polytheism/Monarchy, trading along. Wierdly, I was able to trade for alphabet and writing and got Philo first after I got Polytheism and was able to get Monarchy as the free tech. I concentrated on internal growth and didn't get scouts out for awhile.
I had wines nearby, and soon found Scandinavia to my north - they had furs, ivory and silks, horses, but no iron. I had iron
I had my first target.
War with Scandinavia started in 670 BC, stealing their ivory (after they had started Soz
) A bunch of SGL's and several culture flips later, I took the last Vikiing city in 30 BC and looked for my next victim.
Joanie had been at war with Elizabeth and Gandhi for years, it seemed. They were very near me. Paris had the Pyramids, which are key for effective poprushing in a 100K game. She was my target and from 30 BC to 260 AD, we took french cities, along with a few flips back. I stopped trying to hold them - just leaving a few gallics outside the city to retake if it flips to take it back.
In 230 AD, flushed with pride after easily taking out 1 civ and taking down another (with help), I attacked portugal. (I think they were at war with Rome at the time) I took several cities and then Rome (with whom I had had a phony war for a long time) showed up on my borders... with a stack of about 70 legions and MDI. Swords and MDI I could handle, but Gallics die way to often against legions. And my forces were... small. So I made peace with everyone.
Governmental follies:
30 AD, I traded for republic and revolted. As I was researching Gunpowder, I decided to revolt to Feudalism to start pop-rushing some culture, which I was way behind on, so I revolted in in 280 AD again. In 410 AD, I realized that I was in a lot of danger of being out researched (was still on chemistry) and revolted back to republic my culture was up to 309 cpt, up from 117 cpt in 280 AD.
In 610 AD, I revolted BACK to Feudalism I was up to 121 cities now, and I had to get some pop-rushing done. I was also researching theory of gravity and it was pretty clear that I had to keep up research in this game or the AI would bury me.
In 810 AD, I revolted back to republic (my 6th revolt!!). My cpt was up 822, which was good, but I was still behind the leaders and I wasnt catching up fast enough. My win date was 1655, but I would not have double the next culture at that point. But I needed to get steam and I wanted to get to Rep Parts and engineers. When I finished Steam, I realized that what I REALLY needed was a pop-rush government that had no weariness and I researched Communism.
In 1030, I revolted to Communism for the first time in my civ career!!! I researched electricity and Rep Parts and the combination of civil engineers and poprushing made this a ridiculously good government for a 100K game. I was able to get universities in ALL of my cities, and the corruption model meant that I was making a profit, even with 140 cities with temple, cathedral, lib, uni and colloseum.
It took me a long time to build the secret police headquarters I forgot about it completely, then had to trade for espionage. Around this time, I realized another mistake I had made in selecting opponents India, England and Rome were all still alive and they were MONSTERs. At one point, Rome was at war with England and Rome was sending units over my lands they had nearly 200 units, mainly cavs, in my territory!! I had never seen that many units below Sid before. It was very intimidating.
My wars at this point were pretty much over, except when Spain (whom I was supplying with 3 luxuries and horses, for her 1) decided to attack some cities with a few guys walking through. I do not understand this, except they did steal my iron city but they were weak compared to me and it wasnt like it was undefended. They didnt like my response, though
As time went on, other things started happening that I never seen I started flipping AI cities!!!! Granted, they were mainly ones that Rome took from England, and then flipped to, but it was very impressive. Especially when I flipped a city with the Great Wall!!!
This is perhaps less impressive since I was the 4th civ to hold Lyons (France->England->Rome->Celts), but still - flipping a city with a wonder on Deity
Finished in 1495, making 2303 cpt. My closest opponent was India, who was making 973 cpt. Rome and England were each in the 700s China never got off their island and Portugal and Spain had gone the way of the dodo long before.
