How does a 32 MB Video Card run Civ IV? Is the performance suitable to run large-ish maps?

Most people don't know yet because the game hasn't worked for the majority since it was released. My guess, currently no. But when the patch comes out, I am sure you will have more information available. I have a shared memory video board and I can turn it down to 32mb. So i'll post when I can find out myself.

I'm running a 32MB Radeon 7200 PCI with the Omega drivers (v2.5.97a). I have an Athlon 1600+ on a WinXP SP2 system and 768MB of SDRAM.

I can run CivIV, and have played through a couple of games. However, I run it on the lowest graphics settings possible. Aside from many of the other bugs experienced by people with waaaay better cards than I, it works for the most part.

I will say, though, that when zoomed in close enough for unit movement and city view, the framerate slows down. A lot. I'm a pretty patient person, so I just wait for the transitions to happen. I occasionally get the Chesire cat leaderheads, though most of the time even those work.
Zoomed out to globe view and it's just fine.

I've only tried playing on a small and regular map, limiting my competition to 4 other civs (so far). Knowing that the game is still buggy and stressing my system (memory leak??), I haven't wanted to play on anything larger or more demanding until I've patched.

Waiting for the patch would be good. You might be taking a gamble if you just go out and buy it -- obviously I don't take my own advice :) , but whatever.
After a patch I can try to let you know if performance improves for me, if you'd like...

Hello again.

With the new patch, I have noticed an improvement in gameplay. I'm still using the lowest graphics settings, but so far my large map with 8 civs is running fine. About 300AD on Noble setting.
The framerate still drops when zoomed in, but for the most part the transitions are faster than they used to be. I'm still playing it slowly though, and being patient.

Of note, the first time I loaded (after installing the new patch) I had a pop-up telling me that my system doesn't meet minimum specs and that I can expect performance problems.
Hadn't seen that before. I can only assume that it's referring to my video card.

EDIT - Like a number of other players using large maps, the discovery of the Calendar tech immediately caused slower performance. With this must be a game issue, not my card, given that I was already running at a lower framerate, this was annoying. Again, I can still play, but I have to be patient.

I have an ATI 9000 with 32MB. With the patch it will play on a tiny map so long as I do not select a leader. I have just met my first AI civ and the game froze. I think the leader animations are my problem. Anyone know how to get around this? (The patch did NOT tell me I was below spec!)
[ I am playing in window mode, graphics on low, graphics card set to performance, movies off)
