.

For conquering the world though, you'd want to go with Redcoat - they'd have 85 strength everywhere that isn't the home continent. So basically anywhere that isn't the spit of land you started on. I should stress that "continents" exist in pangea and continental map types. Landmasses get sub-divided into continental 'plates' so there's nothing necessarily "overseas" about the redcoat aside from their free embarking.

I agree though - they're both awesome. They even retain their usefulness in their respective areas of control once infantry come online, as they're stronger with the bonus.

Industrial units (I think?), in a Corp, in their ideal situation, versus Medieval units is a pretty big advantage, so that's not too surprising.

large armies armed with weapons of napoleonic era tech beat up packs of "warriors" with swords and bows. Sounds awesome to me ... so I've to play france the next time :-D

There appears to be an unwritten bonus happening in my games when you have a unit from a later era. The sheer numbers presented don't add up when my Redcoats at STR 94 or so (through promotions and such) were facing STR 70 or infantry and it showed total defeat and major loss as my result... ???

Seems like the OP has a similar effect going on only he is the advanced one. The numbers don't make sense.

Seems so, because my field guns oblitherated promoted pikes and crossbowmen, and did a fair chunk of damage to cities until said cities surpassed them era wise, then the field guns did only 1/4 of their damage.

So yep. There's an undocumented ERA modifier... I hate this kind of **** thrown into games like that.It is sloppy game design. Let us KNOW! And it's just messy to track two sets of quantities! One that we know, the other we don't know. Just UP the str numbers of the units as you advance appropriately designers. Sheesh!

All right, so are you upset about the (apparent) fact that the bonus exists, or that you weren't told about it?

I'm pretty sure that since the dawn of time, people have been saying that spearmen should have no chance against guns.

My complaint would be (inspired solely by the OP's example) that the difference in unit power should be narrowed a bit if there's an era bonus, because the two together make for overpowering situations that remove all hope from catching up from a tech deficit if your neighbor should decide to whale on you when they get it. (Haven't played the game yet.)
